Feminist Tumblr: ‘Queer Artist’ Loves ‘Awesome Blasphemous’ Dildos

Melanie Thibodeau is a 23-year-old graduate of Emily Carr University “a public post-secondary University located on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Established in 1925 as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, it is named after Canadian artist Emily Carr.” What kind of lessons did Ms. Thibodeau learn there?

Melanie Thibodeau (b. 1992) is a Vancouver-based queer artist whose practice is focused around ideas about the body, having a body, and the ways in which materials and colour can affect one’s body. Their work is interdisciplinary, focusing on sculpture, painting, and installation, and they have previously worked with topics surrounding nostalgia and emotion; gender, sexuality, and feminism; and comfort vs. discomfort. Thibodeau’s recent investigations have been in conversation with research surrounding the notion of the fetish/fetishism, and the etymology and usages of that word.

Her “queer” art is about “gender, sexuality, and feminism”? This may explain what she posts on her Tumblr blog, such as spray-painting “Cuntz 4 Ever” and “Pussy Power” on the wall and exposing her breasts.

Ms. Thibodeau’s NSFW ideas about feminist art include such works as “Clitoris” and “Dildo” and “Fellatio.” She actually worked at a sex-toy store, where she described a “slow day at work. 7 customers in 12 hrs, and there’s no internet so i just read theory and wrote and got anxious about existing. i’ve changed so much, and have too many feels and theory and porn make me cry sometimes. . . . i need more humans in my life.” She once spent more than five hours getting a tattoo of a woman tied up in bondage gear with the mottos “Safety” and “Consent.”

Obviously, Ms. Thibodeau is the avant-garde of 21st-century queer art — posting nude selfies on her Tumblr blog and posing with her girlfriend, “Satan With a Vagina.” One hesitates to imagine the “performance art” possibilities she and her girlfriend may have in mind:

So many awesome blasphemous toys.
We are very happy with them!”

Crucifix dildos and “Satan With a Vagina”? Doesn’t this queer art make you wonder who’s in charge of Feminist Tumblr?

UPDATE: Ms. Thibodeau’s girlfriend, “Satan With a Vagina,” is also quite enthusiastic about the crucifix dildo:

“The silicone is so soft…thank you Jesus!”

This sacrilegious sex toy (7-½ inches long, 1-¾ inches diameter) retails for $65, but I doubt this queer feminist duo paid full retail. You see, “Satan With a Vagina” works at a sex-toy store in Vancouver, and here’s the store’s description:

This “friendly atmosphere” employs Alicia a/k/a “Satan With a Vagina.” A Portuguese immigrant with blue hair, tattoos and facial piercings, Alicia is on a “kinky journey”:
