Mark Steyn imagines the scene when the outlaw is apprehended:

When the D.C. SWAT team, the FBI, and the ATF take out NBC News and the whole building goes up in one almighty fireball, David Gregory will be the crazed loon up on the roof like Jimmy Cagney in White Heat: “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!” At last, some actual must-see TV on that lousy network.

    My main objection to a bread and circuses future is that I won’t get to choose who goes into the arena.

    All Gregory’s leftist media friends are claiming he “lacked criminal intent.” But “intent” is only a necessary part of some crimes. If your reckless actions kill someone, your intent matters. If you have a certain quantity of illegal drugs, you are presumed to have the “intent to distribute.”

    Other crimes, including most gun offenses, involve mere possession of a weapon. Intent has nothing to do with it. It doesn’t matter if you wanted to beat that magazine into a ploughshare, it’s still illegal just to hold it in DC.

    If Gregory were anyone else, he’d already have been arrested.

    IRRC, David Gregory knew that possession of the magazine was illegal and he planned to use it any way. That should establish his intent to commit a crime by breaking the DC law. Mens rea and all that.
