We’ll just mooch Erick Erickson’s quick summary of the Texas situation:

David Dewhurst and Ted Cruz are in a runoff in Texas.
Cruz has long odds in the runoff, given the margin of Dewhurst’s victory.
But it is very doable. Conservatives across the country, however, must unite today. This race must be a national priority for each and every conservative. It is not enough to pray for Ted Cruz, though that helps tremendously.

Via the Chicago Tribune:

Dewhurst led the field, but did not manage to avoid a July 31 runoff. He had about 45 percent of the vote and Cruz about 34 percent with 84 percent of the precincts counted, according to unofficial results on the Texas Secretary of State website.

I, for one, love to see the GOP establishment on notice that conservative support is not a given. The GOP has relatively less Progressive taint than the CommunistDemocrat party, but some days the enthusiasm is difficult to locate.

    I’m not sold on Cruz, people seem to project things onto him which are not necessarily accurate.

    However, Dewhurst is awful.  Time to give somebody else a chance.

     Oh, I doubt it.  The RNC is committed to not letting in anyone who will remove one drop of power and control over our lives from DC.

    This is one of our most important races this year, not only because Cruz is outstanding, and would be without question one of the absolute superstars of our caucus, but because of its importance for Hispanic outreach.   The GOP can either do that outreach on the basis of ethnic pandering and supporting amnesty (the preferred establishment approach), or it can do it on the basis of showing to every young Hispanic in Texas (a majority of young Texans) that an outstandingly qualified conservative named “Cruz” can be the choice of conservatives for a Senate seat in Texas.  

    I know which path I’d prefer.

    I know Ted Cruz.  He is brilliant, and, as he says, a “movement Conservative”  He knows what our principles are, and why.  Texas has politicians, and Dewhurst is one, who make the right sounds, but vote the wrong way.  That is not Ted Cruz. 

    He was one of the lawyers who litigated Bush v. Gore.  He knows, as do my wife and I, just what the Democrats and their willing accomplices in the media were trying to do in Florida.  He fought them, and he won, not, as the Democrats like to claim, five to four, but, on the substantive issues, seven to two.  He knows, because he was there, that the Supremes did not “award the election to Bush.”  Because of his knowledge in depth on this and many other issues, he could be a serious force in the Senate, and beyond.

    Cruz
    200,983 -> 30.03% = Early votes
    479,081 -> 34.23% = Total votes

    Dewhurst
    321,146 -> 47.98% = Early votes
    624,165 -> 44.60% = Total votes

    So while Dewhurst is the deep-pocketed “establishment” candidate, his trend was downward (~3.4%) over the last two weeks. Cruz’s trend was upward ~4.2%.

    Every other candidate’s trending, including third-placing Leppert’s, was pretty much flat (statistical noise).

    Absentee voting, which essentially predates the early votes, had Dewhurst with an even bigger gap; so the positive trend for Cruz (and Dewhurst’s negative trend) has been going on even longer.

    If trends continue and most Not-Dewhurst rallies to Cruz, Cruz can win. If Tea Partyers remain rabid, Cruz [i]will[/i] win.

    So, hitting Cruz’s tip-jar might be a good idea iffin’ you want conservatism to expand.

    Cruz can win but he needs enough money to counter
    Dewhurst’s scurrilous ad barrages and his Soros liketrolls that are flooding talk radio.  He must have moneyin order to get his message out past political junkies.

    Scurrilous ad barrages, Soroslike trolls astroturfing, paying to win/play…and the GOP wonders why some people are beginning to really hate them and call them Dem Jr.?

    Any establishment people who might read this: wake up and smell the coffee.
