I just signed up:

AFP Foundation’s 5th annual Defending the American Dream Summit will be held November 4-5, 2011 at the DC Convention Center in Washington, DC. Radio host Mark Levin has just been confirmed as a keynote speaker.

This is a consolation trip, since I have to be in Philly doing daddy duty instead of Denver for BlogCon on the following weekend.

At any rate, they have some good bus connectivity for folks, and it’s not a huge undertaking. Request readers of this blog advise if you’re attending; we should plan to extend the power of the Axis of Fedora as much as possible.

    Worth the price of admission just to hear Mark Levin! 

    And to hang with Smitty, Sarah and probably a lot of other principled conservatives–how can you go wrong!

    If we can get 6-10 of us together, we’ll save $54 each ($75 vs. $129) if we go with group reservation. I can swing that.

    For all the short history in the USA there has always been a promise of a “better tomorrow” in material terms: better education for our children, better opportunities, bigger houses, more money, more free time. Yet for the first time ever in America the younger generation sees and realizes less opportunity for themselves than their parents had.

    And at the same time never before has the ’emptiness’ of the American dream been better highlighted. The rich and the famous and privileged keep showing us just how miserable their lives are when their lives have no purposebeyond that of aspiring to get more and more and more [of whatever].

    I think the global fascination around people like Charlie Sheen,a seen a few months ago, reaches far deeper — even if just subconsciously.

Money up front, of course. Refundable if we can’t get six. If I get 16 or more, I’ll pass off lead for that group to whoever wants it, they can do the same thing.

    And who “likes” your screeds all the time, anyway? You got a sockpuppet?

    FTR, the first two on your list of the American Dream aren’t “material” wishes, but immaterial. The last is merely a function – you can have it with or without money.

    For that matter, the American Dream itself is an immaterial aspiration – it is nothing less or more than for which any single individual strives in these United States. Broadly, it’s not defined, merely assumed.

    And maybe you ought to look at the barriers being thrown up, and not by
    the “rich”,  that impedes these aspirations and generates a feeling that
    opportunity is lacking nowadays. I seem to remember a similar “malaise”
    when I was young, yet there were still opportunities even if they
    couldn’t readily be seen. You wrote your maudlin note using merely the
    latest iteration of the personal microcomputer revolution, begun in a garage in San Jose. You may have even wrote it on a Mac.

    The American Dream is under siege, but will endure.  We just have to clean out the socialists and disinfect.
