    World War 1 was a “significant unpleasantness” in the same way that the World War 2 was an “opportunity for urban renewal in Germany.” Both true in some regard but slightly understated…

    That day in Serejavo may have been the second “shot heard ’round the world.”

    I was alluding to the Reconstruction description of the U.S. Civil War as “the recent unpleasantness”.

    Well, as a boy growing up in the south, we often heard the phrase “recent unpleasantness” or something akin to that. And it was certainly “significant.” Such comments were inevitably followed by someone mentioning Sherman, followed by everyone spitting on the ground…

    The war was also quite often referred to as “The War Between the States” and “The War of Northern Aggression.” It was not often referred to as “The Civil War” and in strict terms it was not a “civil war.”

    I have been told that my maternal grandfather was a WW1 veteran but I cannot confirm this. His name is not on the WW1 memorial in my home town but that may not have been his home town at the time, plus memorial only lists KIA.
