The producers actually called it something else. For some strange reason, however, this does remind me of covering the Iowa caucuses:

They don’t teach this stuff in journalism school, but they should.

    I could do that.

    Totally.

    If I had the car, the backup and the money to get SF to rent me the streets. Totally no problem.

    Oh and if I was about 40 years younger too. Maybe only 30.

    They did it a bunch of times too. (notice all the previous patch laid.)

    Still. Awesome.

    I had fun and I wasn’t even there. 🙂

    Oh, all ya has to do is wear dem magic shoes…….and a bring a spare pair of Underoos.  I qualified on Rad Racer right there on the sofa (except that drifting part).

    Reminds me of driving in Iraq (sans the IED’s, incoming small arms fire and RPG’s flying overhead). If only up-armored hum-vees could drift …

    One of my 19-year-old son’s friends showed me that video. The coolest part — when I went “wow” — was when he jumped sideways. No even in the rented Mustang did I ever dream of accomplishing something that awesome.

    But “Fear and Loathing,” yeah: Thompson’s abuse of rental cars was a theme of sorts, and it was not fiction. Lewis Grizzard once wrote about the mistake of accepting a ride from Thompson while covering the Super Bowl, and said he’d never been so frightened in his entire life.

     Brown vinyl upholstery — easy to clean afterwards and anything you miss, no one will notice.

    Ken Block didn’t do that on his own. Without the government providing roads, bridges, and various permits to allow him to drive without anyone else around, he couldn’t have succeeded.

    Really, he didn’t have much to do with this bunch of stunts at all. In fact, without the Internet, Block would be a nobody. Thanks Algore.

    That is some awesome awesome driving.  And not the kind of driving that typically happens in San Francisco these days.  That he got permission to do that is amazing in itself.
