Given all the flood damage from Hurricane Irene, what’s the over-under on the amount of stimulus for the Northeast that the good President will call for in his Great Big Cure-What-Ails-You Speech in September? I’m saying $350 billion. Is that a sufficiently big number? We’re all surfers of economic fantasy now, For The Win. What say you?

    I’m guessing that changing the billion to trillion will just about cover it. Why not? It’s no more unrealistic than any other number we could use.

    Vermont’s governor, Peter Shumlin (D), is likely to ask for at least a billion because of the combined damage from the heavy rains and flooding from Irene, and the major damage from storms just a couple of weeks prior to this.

    The City of Barre needs to have a dam totally rebuilt, for instance, and that’s going to require big bucks.

    $40B.  Oblubber will play this for politics.  He knows the GOP will demand offsets (cuts) elsewhere.  Too low, enough RINOs will roll w/o a fight.  Too high, and it’ll reek too much of Prog cronyism.  Just right, and he paints the GOP as heartless meanies.

    He’ll probably want most of it for the Philly area, since they are experiencing possibly record flood levels. Of course he’ll want three or four times as much as what the city needs, and the city itself of course will ask for it. Any attempt by the GOP to moderate the amount, or to ask for offsets as you say, will result in the GOP being slammed for being heartless. And of course, the main purpose of it is to help shore up Obama’s support in Pennsylvania.

    Here’s what I think. Whatever Obama asks for, no matter how outrageous, the GOP should one-up him. Hell all this shit is anyway is vote buying. Let’s turn it into a fucking auction.

    How much did ND get for the flooding? How about IA? TN? NE? SD?

    Take the total of what they got, divide by ten, and send it to the Northeast.

    $350B is on the low side.  More like $500B, maybe $750B.  He’s got a lot of votes to buy, y’know!

    I was gonna make a conjecture that Obama will ask for One Trillion dollars and by the time the boondoggle is over and an accounting is made, it will be found out that cost overruns caused the final total to reach 3.5 Trillion bucks.

    Christie has already started the bidding, saying New Jersey’s damage will be in “. . . the billions, or tens of billions . . .”

    You know Cuomo won’t let New York get less than Jersey.  It will be big.

    We’re nearing the end of the era where the federal government can cover everybody’s misfortunes by natural disasters, just as we are nearing the end for socialist redistributionist welfare.  Obama doesn’t know where the brake is, though, as witnessed by the only budget he’s proposed in detail this year, which increased spending and deficits indefinitely without so much as a gesture towards fiscal responsibility.
