Gay or straight, hazing and being picked on by peers can be brutal. The only reason this is a crime however is the use of photography and YouTube. The regular run of the mill harassment is not actionable at all.
I am sorry to that family for losing their son.

In a just society, the roomie and his equally screwed-up GF would be getting the devil and the living God beaten out of them by their fellow students. Honestly, WTF is wrong with that guy?

I recall a freshman in my college dorm who got blind drunk, took off his clothes, went into the next door dorm room and took a dump in the grill of the through wall heat pump (I think he did not like the guy who lived there), stagered out and passed out spread eagle in the middle of the hall.
I only saw the after effects when the EMTs came to get his stomach pumped for alcohol poisoning. He did not come back to school that year.
Just saying that embarassing things can happen when someone leaves home for the first time. Yes they can be due to bullying. Although they can also be self inflicted (and often alcohol is involved).
This incident at Rutgers will get a lot of news because of the cyber aspects and because the kid who committed suicide is gay, but hazing and abuse like this happens all the time (especially to shy kids who are perceived as weak). If you are 18 years old and think you do not have any options other than suicide…you are wrong. You always have options.

RSM,
This link Gates: Military Growing Apart From America Should be explored further.
The way I read it is Gates seems to be lamenting that the military is being maintained by “flyover” country and elitist progressive areas, as expected are dwindling.
This is a stunning admission whether he realized it or not.

I meant to write “but elitist progressive areas as expected are dwindling.”
