The Green Hills Of Tyrol

They say the Highland Pipe is in the key of the human heart. Gateway Pundit links a BBC clip of the 3 Rifles and 1 Scots cruising the Royal Mile. The tune the band is playing in the clip is “The Green Hills Of Tyrol”. Now, the band no doubt played an awful lot more than that during the parade, but this selection is mildly ironic, since that march refers to a corner of Austria. The song “A Scottish Soldier” resolves the tension.

Here is a slightly cleaner recording of the march:

Bagpipes have got sack.

Hubby, who is educated in these things, says you play the pipes in only two keys, E flat and B flat, but they sound in D and A, respectively.

Complicated music theory stuff. And a big kilt.

Yeah, and you only have a diatonic scale. Hence the fact it all sounds like bagpipes.

I dare you try and listen to Amazing Grace as played on the pipes without getting a catch in your throat and a little teary eyed…

“The Green Hills of Tyrol” and “The Scottish Soldier” are the same piece of music. The music was written during the Crimean War by a pipe major and was based on a tune from Puccini’s William Tell. The lyrics “The Scottish Soldier” were written by the Scottish music hall performer Andy Stewart.
