While working on my taxes (trying to figure my mileage for 2009) I’ve had the TV in my basement office tuned to MSNBC. Unless Rachel Maddow and her cohorts are hallucinating, the most important story in the world is . . .

Republicans are desperate! Obama and his health-care plan are overwhelmingly popular! Crazy right-wingers are going psycho with fear!

Meanwhile, no less a Democratic Party loyalist than Howard Dean is saying that Democrats who vote for Obama’s health-care plan are doomed beyond hope of redemption. And Democratic incumbents are retiring faster than you can say “unwanted advances toward a junior male staffer.”

The spectacle of Maddow & Co. whistling past the political graveyard is amusing, but it’s not helping me finish this tax stuff. My wife is going to be angry if I don’t get it done, and soon, and that’s what’s driving me psycho with fear . . .

UPDATE: For those who were wondering, I finished the mileage calculations and so my psycho-fear of Mrs. Other McCain has now subsided.

Also, if you’re one of the people who hit the tip jar to help fund my travels during 2009, thank you very, very much. I’m now actually considering a sort of “Victory Lap” road trip in a few weeks to celebrate the past year’s successes, meet up with some friends and do some campaign coverage. Our good friend Barbara Espinosa lives in Arizona (where a certain crazy cousin of mine thinks he’s too young for retirement), and I’m thinking I might stop in Kansas City to see my buddy Nathan Cossey en route.

This expedition could even go all the way to California, where JSF at Valley of the Shadow has been soliciting my interest lately. The itinerary is sketchy at this point, but once I pay back the rental-car company for that deer I hit in Tupper Lake while covering the Hoffman campaign . . .

Well, I just got off the phone with Smitty, who sees the insane genius factor involved. The route could be something like this: Columbus, Ohio; St. Louis, Mo.; Kansas City, Mo.; Austin, Texas; Phoenix, Ariz.; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Los Angeles, Calif. That’s 3,357 miles.

The return trip would involve a swing through the South — I’d like to see Pat Austin in Shreveport and visit some folks in Alabama, Georgia and Florida– and the total mileage could exceed 7,000 miles. All 7,000 of those miles would be tax-deductible as legitimate business expenses.

Hit the tip jar, folks. This might be even more fun than NY-23 or the Scott Brown campaign. As long as I don’t hit another deer . . .

    Yeah … but not quite as fast as Republicans. Even though the Dems have the majority at the moment, only 17 of their congressional incumbents are retiring, compared to 20 Republicans (as of yesterday).
