“The natives probably had some rituals surrounding the berry harvest.”

“You mean your people don’t even use this?”

“What for? We shop at the big box store like everyone else.”

“Whatever. We’ve already talked about the funky native attire–”

“That Chinese supplier says they can deliver by the end of January.”

“Excellent. We’ll bring in a choreographer to give you some suitably primitive, semi-erotic, yet family-friendly dance moves.”

“OK.”

“And then you’ll need to fake some tradition about the berries. Do you guys make any sort of moonshine?”

“We. . .don’t do alcohol well. Not even for Economic Development Consultants.”

Tenzing Three, Scout One for the Double-Check Team came back through the maybe bamboo with his heartbeat elevated.
“Artifact, sir. Plasticene. No power source noted. 100 yards up.”
    His visible curiousity stirred mine.

All ten members of the DC moved out as one. With our sound nullies, our training, we could have walked right up on a deer, and slapped its rump. In silence, we came upon the Artifact.

Now, why would someone make a fake rock, and then stash it here? Too little info. Shannon 2, no 5, had sent a message.

“Interesting. Be wary.” Which was cryptic as all get out. I began to think that the Shannon clones had sent too much time alone with their uplifted mouse. She was begining to forget to be human.

And there were the runes melted into the surface. He could call Shannon 5 back. His time dilation in the Lower Stretchies was such that he had two years in deep space for one year on Earth. Her, well it was closer to five to one.

And he so badly wanted to see her, even if she just a clone, with memories attached, but then so was he. Instead, he began studying.

Funny thing, kind of apropo to your story…back in the mid 70’s I worked for a short time at a tourist trap store on the Cherokee Indian reservation. More than half the crap we were selling was made in Taiwan and Japan. About the only items made by actual Native Americans were some of the more expensive moccasins and the turquoise jewelry.
