The yellow crane stunned him. Now? That color here at the weekly update meant what it meant. Shaking, he sent the text.

* * *

He hoped she came today, the smoldering redhead at the arboretum the last couple of weeks. She’d sit at noon and launch a white paper crane. She was such a beauty, the gardeners said nothing. He’d point out his yellow one and start a conversation.

* * *

Parking delayed her. She seethed, arriving five minutes late. Two men gaped as she released it, one in horror; the other, lust. They heard a distant *BOOM*.

    Fold, Kurushima-san, the Master had said. And fold he did. Precise creases at exacting angles, and as he did, he felt the land stir, the air brushed sweat from his brow, and the water under the wooden dock rocked with waves from time-swept echoes of pebbles tossed by Kurushima when he was but a youngling.

    And the last bit came, and a yellow crane, made of gold lily leaf paper, stood ready. And Kurushima-san breathed out on to the crane, and felt his soul leave his body and inhabit the paper, which was no longer paper, but a Royal Crane.

    Flapping up over the pond, and then up the forrest, and the hill, and he spiralled back, rising in the thermal on the edge of the mountain until he cleared it

    And over the mountain he went to spy on the enemy army. There were a thousand men, no, a thousand samurai, and scattered amongst them were origamists, like himself.. But how many?

    It was easy enough to dress a solider in a mage’s robe, and pretend you had more magic than you did. Or the opposite. The only thing to do was to strafe the camp. And so the Royal Crane swept down. After thirty seconds a cry went up, and then withing thirty seconds, up came creates of origamik, and he quick counted them, six, and one was a small pair, so that was five mages.

    A straight dive to dodge the attacks, and then using the speed he swept off to the right, but before he could flee, a robin origami ripped the cranes’ tail feathers loose.

    So casting all caution off, the Royal Crane flung himself forward. His path was awkward, and he crashed sliding twice into the mountain before launching again. And once over the mountain, he just sat in a long slide that ended in the pond.

    And once there, his soul left the crane, and attached itslelf to a nearby trout. And then his soulless body caught the trout, and ate it, and soul and body were met again.
