FMJRA 2.0: Water Pump Fails In Houston, Film At 11

Thanks to an untimely failure of the water pump on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee, I am holed up in Baytown (a suburb of Houston) for a few days while the local Jeep dealer does the needful. There will be a burger post and a book post this weekend in addition to the usual FMJRA and Rule 5 Sunday posts, because there’s nothing on TV and I have to keep busy somehow.     Sorry to hear about the H2O pump. My experience with Houston is that it was the largest city I ever visited that rolled up the sidewalks at 9PM. You can get caught up on your reading!

    Don’t go cheap on the pump (as if you would), but the most brutal part of the trip is ahead of you. A friend of mine would buy cheaper rebuilts because they were “100% guaranteed”. After tearing down and rebuilding the front of his Mustang three times, he finally got one that didn’t leak!

    The options were to get it fixed at a dealer or not get it fixed at all, since the neighborhood gas station and auto repair joint appears to have died out in this part of Texas.

    I suspect that’s related to how Texas celebrates free enterprise by not allowing Tesla to have its own stores. The auto dealers seem to have a lot of pull.

    It was that way in Nashville before I left. I had a good one up in Gallatin. They had opened their own place when K-Mart ended their auto service departments. They still exist around small towns, fortunately.
