TERROR IN TEXAS: Garland Gunman Elton Simpson Was Muslim Convert

Sunday night’s terrorist attack on the American Freedom Defensive Initiative “Draw Mohammed” event in Texas was apparently committed by an Arizona man who converted to Islam:

The father of one of the suspected gunman in the Garland, Texas shooting told ABC News today that his son “made a bad choice.”
“We are Americans and we believe in America,” Dunston Simpson said. “What my son did reflects very badly on my family.”
Simpson’s son, Elton, was identified earlier today to ABC News by a senior FBI official as one of the suspects in Sunday’s failed attack on a Texas community center that was hosting an event displaying cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad. Elton Simpson and another man were killed by a police officer after they opened fire on the officer and a security guard, local police said.
Today FBI agents and a bomb squad were at Simpson’s home in an apartment complex in north Phoenix conducting searches of the apartment. Officials believe Simpson is the person who sent out several Twitter messages prior to the attack on Sunday, in the last one using the hashtag #TexasAttack about half an hour before the shooting. Prior to that, the Twitter account holder had published messages sympathetic to Islamic terror groups such as ISIS.

Two social media accounts tweeted messages about the attack apparently before it happened.
A Twitter account titled “Shariah is Light” — bearing the image of extremist Islamic propagandist Anwar Awlaki, who was killed in an American drone strike in Yemen in 2011 — posted an allusion to the attack just minutes before it happened.
Before the shooting, the “Shariah is Light” account also tweeted a command to follow another account, titled “AbuHussainAlBritani,” which also tweeted before and after the attack. . . .
“The knives have been sharpened, soon we will come to your streets with death and slaughter!” tweeted the “AbuHussainAlBritani” account before the attack.
After the attack, the “AbuHussainAlBritani” account began tweeting praise of the Texas shooting, and linked the attack to the militant group Islamic State.
“Allahu Akbar!!!!! 2 of our brothers just opened fire at the … art exhibition in texas!” the account tweeted. “Kill Those That Insult The Prophet.”
“They Thought They Was Safe In Texas From The Soldiers of The Islamic State,” the account tweeted.
The accounts have since been suspended.

The second shooter has just been identified:

Law enforcement officials said Monday afternoon that the second shooter in the Texas attack was Nadir Soofi, 34, Simpson’s roommate.
FBI agents searched a Phoenix apartment Monday as part of the investigation into the shooting, which occurred Sunday evening in Garland, a city near Dallas.
The FBI had begun monitoring Simpson again recently. Authorities said Monday that they were still working to determine details about the two men and who may have instigated the plan. The FBI does not believe the shooting was directed by an international terrorist group, but is still investigating.

UPDATE: Today I’ve had my office TV on CNN all day and it was insulting to watch the network go out of its way to depict Pamela Geller as an irresponsible hatemonger. They had on two different guests (Mark Potok and Heidi Beirich) from the SPLC, as well as a professor who has written a book about “Islamophobia.” Noah Rothman at Hot Air discusses the liberal media’s smears against Geller and observes:

This isn’t the first time an organization listed as a “hate group” by the SPLC was attacked by gun-wielding maniacs, but you don’t see many media outlets looking into the climate of murderous violence inspired by this liberal advocacy group.

The SPLC is a dangerous totalitarian propaganda outfit.

UPDATE II: More information about Nadir Soofi:

According to his Facebook page, Soofi spent a considerable amount of time with his little brother. He’s a graduate of the University of Utah and the International School of Islamabad in Pakistan. His page also shows multiple posts featuring Palestinian and anti-police propaganda. Frequently, he posts the phrase “Eid Mubarak” meaning celebration to the blessed. Soofi was the owner of Effinity Solutions, a carpet cleaning business in Phoenix. In July 2013, he called himself a “newbie to the carpet cleaning industry.”

    I am wondering why there was a delay in identifying the second gunman after they identified the first one. When they identified the first one, you could tell based on his name that he was probably a convert. That goes along with some of the recent Muslim inspired crimes in this country (i.e. Colleen LaRose, Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, Alton Nolan, Zachary Chesser, etc.)

    Since the second gunman sounds like a person who was born Muslim and not a convert, that may undercut the MSM’s recent tactic, which is to claim that American-born converts to Islam do not count as “real” Muslims and so their actions are not supposed to count against the religion.

    We are frequently assured that Islam is “not a monolith” and that Muslims are a diverse and pluralistic people. Yet, when these newer and “diverse” Muslims commit crimes, we are told that they do not count as “real” Muslims because they are white, black, or are just not the right kind of brown person (Jose Padilla).

    My hope is that Islamofascists, being realists, will resume attacking the soft targets of blue states. These two peons barely managed to wound a guard before being liquidated. Texas is obviously far too great a challenge for jihadis.

    We also had things we used to deal with them:

    Pam Geller, the organizer of the event is a hero to me in so many ways
    (and way hot to boot!). She stands steadfastly against the Radical
    Muslim radicals as well as pointing out the genocide being carried out
    against Christians as well as Jews by this scum. For this she is vilified and worse by
    the powers that be. Her stand for Freedom of Speech and ideals has got
    to be heeded by all.

    Kudos to her as well as to the police who gunned down the radical scum.

    An earwitness who was outside of the building — my best guess, smoke break — heard a lot of bangs happen very quickly, then two slower ones. A police spokesman said that they opened fire on the security guard, then a police officer who was nearby came over and shot them, and that it all happened in a matter of seconds.

    Putting them together potentially implies that the terrorists fired wildly at the security guard, hitting him once in the leg, and then the police officer shot them each once. If so, that would be some mighty fine shooting indeed.

    I just poured out a rant you might like (or hate) over at Scoop’s. It concerns Rev. Graham’s “disappointment” at the Geller event, which according to him was all about mocking a religion. Herewith begins said rant (sorry for the copy and paste):

    This is pathetic. Sometimes watching conservative leaders is like watching a guy try to walk upstairs, and he keeps stepping on his own necktie.

    You know, the purpose of the event was *not* mockery. Not even close. Not even all of the images were intended as mockery (most were, but some fell directly under the heading of political cartoon, and were much more commentary than mockery).     Geller herself did not engage in mockery. I personally doubt any of the speakers engaged in mockery, but even if any did, so what? Did they spend the entire speech in mockery? I doubt it. They were addressing a SERIOUS problem: every religion is relentlessly mocked by the left except for one. (Any guesses?)

    And by the way, Fawstin’s winning image was not mockery. It was political commentary.

    So the vast majority of right-side response to Geller’s event is based—once again—on the way the left framed the event in the public discourse. How very stupid.

    And kudos to the interviewer, who got it right. Graham is discouraged? Are you kidding me?

    This is one reason I tend to stay at arm’s length from the conservative movement (or any other movement, really). Conservatives have a strong tendency to let the left frame the issues, determine the language used, and establish the “real” reasons for any event. This is a continual source of frustration. You can’t win that way. It’s like spotting the enemy all of the best artillery positions before a battle.

    Andrew Breitbart understood this clearly. It’s behind a lot of his writing and speaking if you care to revisit it. His most famous quote is probably this one: “Politics is downstream from culture.” He hoped to get conservatives and libertarians involved in moving upstream so they can have more say in the popular culture. (And it’s been a double-edged sword, with many conservatives swimming upstream, only to begin sounding like liberal nutjobs because they STILL let the left frame the debate).

    Things like this claim by Graham are maddening. And it happens over and over again. Ben Carson has reacted wrongly on several current event-related issues because of this problem. Trump made a fool out of himself once again by doing so. Carly Fiorina did, too. Ready, Fire, Aim.

    Get ahead of the left, d*mmit.

    Stop letting *them* decide what terms to use.

    And for God’s sake, do some freaking research before opening your yap and letting the default language of the left pour out and frame your stupid response.
