It’s been highly amusing reading Brad Torgersen’s blog lately, what with the recent public meltdown of Sasquan GoH David Gerrold, Arthur Chu “helping” NPR with a hamfisted report on the goings-on, and other hilarity. Looming in the background, of course, is the steady increase in supporting memberships resulting from #GamerGate taking notice of WorldCon, the Hugos, and (from their point of view) another arena in which to beat the Social Justice Wankers like a rented mule. But hey – if you want to delve into the history of SF fandom as it’s being made, check out Brad’s blog and (of course) Larry Correia‘s.

Anyway, I am somewhat late to the party in observing that the main reason the CHORFs are in a white-hot fury is that the nominees from the Sad Puppies (collated by Brad Torgerson) and Rabid Puppies (suggested by Vox Day) slates pretty much swept the Hugo nominations this year. Here’s the list of nominees; the ones I’m probably going to vote for are in bold, but you should read them all yourself before you vote.

    I would strongly suggest you look at “The Plural of Helen of Troy” by John Wright. While “One Bright Star” is an excellent work, Helen is an amazing piece of science fiction.

    A supporting membership is $40 and also qualifies you for the downloadable nomination packet, which should include most all of the written and art works up for vote, so that you can read them and make an informed decision. It’s a good deal.

    I missed the deadline to be able to nominate, but I’m really excited about being able to vote for Skin Game. That might sound weird, but the Dresden Files is my favorite series in my favorite sub-genre — and I say that as someone with a couple of bookcases full of sci-fi and fantasy, despite mostly using libraries. (There’s no way I could afford my habit otherwise.)

    See, it is possible. We can have open debate, and compel the SJWs to either man up and engage or throw a tantrum. Every action of theirs to date makes me certain option two is their game plan. They don’t have a clue how to do option one anyway.

    And that’s fine. Ordinary people who think they have no skin in the game (which is a false assumption because everyone has skin in the game that’s the Culture War) will see reasonable adults on one side and shrieking out of control brats on the other. That’s nothing but good for our side.

    Once you chase your tail down the conspiracist’s rathole, it permeates your entire mindset. Nothing happens that cannot be explained by the conspiracy, in fact, can ONLY be explained by the conspiracy.

    There’s also the sort of binary thinking at work so beloved by progressives, to wit: I don’t like fascists. I don’t like Robert Stacy McCain (to select an entirely random example). Ergo, RSM is a Nazi. QthehellED!

    Robert Tracinski had a good article a couple weeks back about how the Hugos show a model for how to fight, since we’re all draftees in Culture War 4.0 whether we like it or not.

    The SJWs are so silly. They have Big Media at their beck and call, and they keep using it to try to tie #GamerGate to #SadPuppies.

    Of course they think it’s a #WinButton to spread their threat narrative around, but they’re also telling a bunch of anti-SJW gamers — many of whom are also readers — that they’re not wanted.

    I predict that the SJWs will reprise their media campaign in the lead-up to next year’s Hugos, with exactly the opposite results of what they want.

    I’ve been checking out Castalia House, mostly based on: they have John Wright and Tom Kratman. So Vox Day is getting kind of a ‘talent by association’ since I’m trying out some of his books, too. Huzzah for the Kindle ‘sample’ feature!

    John Wright’s “Transhuman and Subhuman” is the most serious thought I’ve had over a story anthology. Period. Holy cow, can this guy write.

    Kratman, I’m in the first part of “A Desert Called Peace,” and see no reason to stop any time soon…

    Vox Day: I’ve sampled a few of his Selenoth writings, and find the idea of Tolkien meets Rome to be enough of a hook to jump in, as soon as I finish “A Desert Called Peace.”

    For those of you who don’t know, from the point of view of the Social Justice Warrior crowd:

    John Wright, as a practicing Catholic, is the designated homophobic misogynist, while Vox Day is the designated racist/nazi/boogeyman of the Hugos. Tom Kratman is the designated evil warmonger/islamophobe/opposer of women’s rights (as he has stated a disagreement with the idea of women in combat as a general thing).

    Funny. None of them seem quite as evil as I’ve been led to believe. Or maybe I’m JUST AS EVIL, and thus would not notice.

    One can never tell…

    Gerrold got a response in his tantrum open letter from Brad in the comments and proceeded to delete them with an Orwellian (natch) “have you no shame” over the organizers of Sasquan. He’s obtuse to the fact that the folks who caused the authors to back out and folks like him to twist their panties were from his own side. The puppies did NOT threaten them or otherwise bully anyone (they were contacted and got their OK for the puppy slate). They were reacting purely to the bile and vitriol of people like Gerrold, Scalzi, and the Haydens, who were quite vocal with a “nice career you have, it would be sad to see something happen to it” sneer.

    I’ve watched all of the Long Form, and I’m also of the opinion that EoT is the best of the bunch. Say what you will about Cruise – he always brings his A-game. And us Puppies aren’t about that ancillary garbage anyway, right?

    Interstellar was well-made, but I feel it was trying too hard. That’s a problem with a lot of “hard-sf” regardless of format, IMHO.

    GotG was just so much pulpy fun, though. I got a soft spot in my heart for it. #2 on my ballot, for sure.

    It’s backfired badly. Before TNH shot her mouth off on Twitter by accusing the Sad Puppies of being a front for #GamerGate (when any damn fool knows the Puppies antedate Gamergate by two years) most gamers weren’t even aware of the Hugos, much less that they might be able to buy a vote.

    This is not a joke. He really is doing that.

    He’s encouraging his followers to all wear tee-shirts and ribbons so that everyone will know who the “Correct” thinkers are.

    I actually think he might be right. GG brought a few people in, but the reality is that most people in GamerGate neither knew nor really cared that much about the Hugos. It’s not their passion.

    I DO think there will be an up-surge in nominating voters next year- but I don’t think it will Sad Puppies supporters doing it.

    The SJBullies have a lot of media outlet connections that they can tap on the shoulder. (I’ve lost count. I know they’ve got false stories in The Guardian, NPR, Entertainment Weekly, Slate, Salon… I’m sure I’m forgetting some.) The result has been a LOT of SJWs pledging to buy Hugo memberships and make sure that those evil bastages at Sad Puppies don’t ever, ever get awards ever again. Forever. Because they’re the inclusive ones. /head desk/

    BTW- one of the writers for The Guardian was just caught leaving bad, one star Reviews on Amazon for Sad Puppy supported books and authors- after admitting she’d never read any of the books.

    THIS is what we’re up against.

    It doesn’t matter. They don’t have any winning moves. The worst-case scenario is that we turn the playing field of the Hugos into a stage instead, show everyone how ugly the thought police are when the masks come off, and point out that there is nowhere you can retreat to where they won’t pursue you.

    David Gerrold should just STFU and finish his War against the Chttorr series that he has been promising for over a decade…He may be a tool but I really liked the series.
