30,000 ‘Personal’ Emails?

Hillary Clinton’s big press conference Tuesday, where she “addressed” the subject of her official emails, she said this:

We went through a thorough process to identify all of my work- related emails and deliver them to the State Department. At the end, I chose not to keep my private personal emails — emails about planning Chelsea’s wedding or my mother’s funeral arrangements, condolence notes to friends as well as yoga routines, family vacations, the other things you typically find in inboxes.
No one wants their personal emails made public, and I think most people understand that and respect that privacy. . . .
In going through the e-mails, there were over 60,000 in total, sent and received. About half were work-related and went to the State Department and about half were personal that were not in any way related to my work. I had no reason to save them, but that was my decision because the federal guidelines are clear and the State Department request was clear.
For any government employee, it is that government employee’s responsibility to determine what’s personal and what’s work-related. I am very confident of the process that we conducted and the e-mails that were produced.

Now, this is an issue because (a) Hillary’s emails as Secretary of State have been subpoenaed by a congressional committee, and (b) Hillary has admitted carrying on official correspondence with a non-governmental email account that was hosted on her own private server. Therefore, investigators are being asked to take her word for all this, because there is no verifiable record — no government computer with a hard drive that can be checked with forensic methods — to confirm what she’s claiming.

And here’s my thing: 30,000 “personal” emails in four years?

Do the math: That’s 7,500 emails a year or (divide 7,500 by 365) 20.5 personal emails every day, 7 days a week.

Gosh, Mrs. Clinton, you were the Secretary of State of the most powerful nation in the world, in charge of a federal department with 18,000 employees around the world, and you had time for 20 personal emails — “not in any way related to my work” — every single day? Madame Secretary, I don’t have time for that, and I’m just a damned blogger.

Does anyone actually believe that Hillary had 7,500 emails every year — at the same account she used for her State Department business — about planning Chelsea’s wedding, condolence notes, yoga routines, family vacations? Her husband doesn’t even use email, so who all had Mrs. Clinton’s private email address to be sending her these personal emails  “not in any way related to my work”? Were these people not the least bit reticent about emailing the Secretary of State?

Think about it. In my line of work — and I’m just a damned blogger — there are some people I only contact with very important information. You don’t want to be the guy who’s bombarding, say, Mark Levin or Glenn Reynolds with an email announcing every little clever bit of snark you write.  No, you only send those guys an email tip when you think you’ve got something hot, something big.

From such an understanding of ordinary email etiquette, therefore, we may assume a few things. First, that this private email address — the one Mrs. Clinton hosted on a server located in her home — was known only to a few people who were very close to her. It wasn’t like she was handing out business cards with this email address to people she shook hands with at cocktail receptions, OK? Exactly how many of those people would be emailing her about yoga routines? Or who, among these close associates of hers, after finding a joke on the Internet and in the process of spamming it out to their friends, would think, “Hey, this cat video is so funny, I’ll CC it to the Secretary of State”?

Does that make sense? No, it doesn’t make sense at all.

    Huh. And she claims she got the same number of work emails? That’s funny. I’m just a damned math nerd, and I get waaaay more work emails than that in a day.

    She honestly thinks that we’re all idiots. What a battle-ax. She offends me in every way possible, the lying old harpy.

    The snarky part of me wonders: did Mrs Clinton have to withhold her “personal” emails because they referred to a President she doesn’t particularly like as a “stupid f(ornicating) n(egro)”? I could actually picture that as having happened.

    The Clintons publicly support President Obama, but they both have reputations for holding grudges. 2008 still rankles cankles.

    Mrs Clinton’s decision to keep the server private won’t stand: if the State Department itself does not request the server, there will be plenty of FoIA lawsuits, and probably a congressional subpoena, demanding the server.

    All that Mrs Clinton has done is to let this thing fester.

    With the Clintons, there are only two explanations for any problem–a) we are corrupt or b) we are incompetent. When in doubt, they always default to b) (for example, she “cannot recall” virtually anything concerning her legal practice, conveniently misplaces legal documents and accidentally sets up a computer server in her home.) Only for Democrats would this be considered appropriate or even tolerable for a Presidential candidate.

    I thought about that, but we’re talking about Hillary Clinton here, and, while Lois Lerner is evil, sure, Mrs. Clinton is off the charts evil. Demonically so. She knows that she can do anything she wants to do with complete impunity. She always has. She could have me killed in a thrice for saying so, and even if there were boatloads of evidence against her, she’d say “what difference does it make?” and the starry-eyed, mesmerized press and the rest of the communists in this country would salute her for getting rid of another racist.

    I’ll be really happy if I’m proven wrong, though.

    Finally, it took the megasized brain of the ‘Stacey’ to finally look at the numbers, but if I may take it a step further. She claims in 4 years as the head of State (for the most bitchin’ country in history) with all of the craziness going on in the Middle East, NKorea, Russia and NAfrica that she only received 20.5 emails per day???
    I get 20 emails of spam a day! Ok maybe not that much but its close. Working for corporate America I think we can all agree we receive 20 emails a day about work related items, birthdays, trainings, meetings…
    I would prefer her to just come out and say the truth. I wanted complete control over my emails and I saw how you went after Palin’s personal emails. Fortunately for Palin nothing was there. My emails, not so much.

    No doubt there are many emails of that nature. But there are surely emails twixt her and Huma Abedin, who had an account on that server. We’ll never know how many emails to and from other MB operatives where deleted. How many to and from OIC officials etc.

    The point of having your own server is that deleting the contents is irreversible, if I understand what I’ve read
    Congressional subpoenas have no enforcement without federal LE help. There won’t be any.

    She claims that no classified material went through her email account or sever. If that were true it would severely limit what State Department business she could do via email. It would also mean there is no justification whatsoever for any redaction of the material state turns over to congress or FOIA requests save an occasional SS num or personal address.

    Does the generation that matured during the age of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram buy that. Do people who voluntarily put every detail of their lives on electronic media accept that keeping Hillary’s yoga routines private trumps the public’s right to know? Maybe, Maybe not.

    That brings up an interesting question. Who provides the email accounts for the foundation personnel? I don’t know much about servers or their capacities but I’m guessing that server could handle a lot more email accounts than the handful that Hillary and some of her staff were given in and since 09. The Clintons are extravagant but that’s not exactly the same as wasteful. Hillary claims Bill got that server in the 90s. Would they spend money on email accounts for the foundation hosted by ”other” server companies when they already had their own server? Surely they value the ”privacy” of the foundation’s communications as much of their own.

    It doesn’t make a difference if the emails were classified. I’m not sure what your point is? For someone at that level to only receive and send 20 emails a day is suspect at best.

    There are some hints that if this was the system set up for the ex-president, it may have been paid for with tax dollars, further weakening Hillary’s “It’s MINE” claims.
    My contention, and that of countless others, is that whether Hillary stored the emails on her server or stuffed down the bodice of a stained blue dress, they are her work product as Sec State, & thus belong to the government. Since it’s taken one of more lawsuits to get this much compliance, it is not unreasonable to demand further evidence that she has been completely forthcoming.

    I might be wrong but I had the impression the server was set up for Bill while he was president. Since he is quoted as saying that he’s only sent two emails in his life, one wonders why HE would have acquired a server post presidency at all.

    I’m starting to develop a theory that a large wing of the party doesn’t care. The 2008 primaries forced the more left-libertarian (civil libertarian) wing to face the fact that the opaque, corporatist, establishmentarian, warmongering Clintons were their antithesis on nearly every issue.

    Now, what they found to their dismay is that Obama talked a good game to get their votes, but is literally unprincipled. He only has preferences, so if it’s too hard, then he’ll go with the flow of dragnet domestic espionage, drone strikes with morally questionable rules of engagement, jailing whistleblowers, and so on.

    So, the ones that haven’t defected completely just think that they need a left-libertarian with actual principles. Even if they can’t get one in the White House in 2016, they would rather have four years of a Republican that’s worse than Obama and try again in 2020, then then alternative.

    That alternative would be a Democrat that’s worse than Obama for eight years (since she’ll have enough establishment support to not need the base for re-election), then a Republican that’s worse than Obama for eight years (since the constant drama caused by their opaqueness and arrogance will have turned the whole country against them), and not be able to try again until 2032.

    If I’m right, that could be a pretty compelling mental calculus.

    Your point about the number of emails or suspicious lack of quantity thereof, is notable. However it is probably also moot as she has already stated that all the emails on that server have been erased. The only emails that will ever be released to anyone are contained in those 55,000 pages unless someone stumbles on a received email, archived at state that isn’t among the photocopied pages.
    My point is that since she also claims that no classified material was ever transmitted by her via email, there should be no classified material in those 55,000 pages. If the above is true there can be no justification for redacting any of contents of those 55,000 pages other than the exceptions I mentioned.

    If Leftists mental calculus is compelling than the bar for compelling has been set pretty low.

    The calculation for taking Hillary out of the picture is that this will ”compel” Warren to get in the race. The democratic establishment knows what a disaster this would be. Even if she won the nomination (doubtful) she’s not going to win the office. Beating the senate candidate Martha Coakley couldn’t is not that great an achievement. Warren is a nasty piece of work and would make Ted Cruz seem like Mother Teresa. Warren’s anger only appeals to the basest of the base.

    Does anyone wonder if perhaps Warren isn’t and won’t run for president because maybe she simply doesn’t want to be president? Is it possible she herself knows how unlikely her winning would be.

    Is it possible that her life’s ambition was to be confirmed as the head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau? Is i possible that having been thwarted she only ran for the senate so she could be obnoxious to those who thwarted her? Being head of that Bureau would have given her a lot of power to influence what she cares most about and she’d have been answerable to nobody as long as Obama is president. If she can’t be elected president, and she can’t, the senate gives her the most substantial platform she can have.

    If Bill doesn’t email it’s doubtful he saw a need for his own server. If it was given to him while president it was probably an effort by someone else to bring him up to date with exploding growth of the web.

    Now if Bill or one of his minions realized the value and I don’t mean money, of a personal server 15 years ago and sold him on the idea then this is indeed a very long ongoing conspiracy.

    I believe Bill on this, not because I trust him but because he’s smarter than his wife. It’s said that he uses twitter a great deal. How old is twitter? How searchable, deleteable is twitter? I don’t tweet so there’s alot I don’t know about it but it seems to me that ones tweets are much more public in realtime than email. Bill is certainly aware of this and uses what little judgement he has when tweeting. I don’t recall his tweets getting much attention let alone outrage. He still does that the old fashion way such as posing for pictures with busty strippers.
    Hillary was quoted back in 2000 or so as why would I use email given all the investigations? She might not have had a choice as SoS, but her actions prove she was aware of the potential problems of using email. She screwed that up anyway.
