A Sordid Scandal in Oregon

Posted on | February 12, 2015 | 37 Comments

By the time she was 30, Cylvia Hayes had already been married and divorced twice. She then reportedly was paid to be the “green card wife” of an Ethiopian immigrant. At some point, she became involved in Democrat Party politics in Oregon, running unsuccessfully for the state legislature in 2002. A year later, she began dating John Kitzhaber, a recently divorced Democrat state senator. When Kitzhaber was elected governor of Oregon in 2010, he said his girlfriend Cylvia would serve as the state’s first lady. The idea of the governor shacking up with his girlfriend apparently didn’t bother many Oregonians. It’s a liberal state where Obama got 54% of the vote there in 2012 and where 57% of voters in 2014 approved a measure to legalize recreational marijuana.

Fornication in the governor’s mansion? Who cares?

The general shabbiness of Cylvia Hayes’ character was exposed in 2014 by her ex-boyfriend, and that was before revelations about conflicts of interests involving Hayes’ consulting business. Kitzhaber’s office reportedly attempted to destroy evidence of the governor’s corrupt dealings and, at last, even Democrats in liberal Oregon have had enough:

Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek met with Gov. John Kitzhaber on Thursday morning and told him it was time to resign.
At a 1 p.m. press conference to discuss the meeting, Courtney said the discussion with Kitzhaber was difficult.
“He was upset,” Courtney said. “He was defiant. He was struggling.” . . .
Courtney said that he and Kotek have been trying to get security for Secretary of State Kate Brown, who would become governor if Kitzhaber were to step down.
Courtney said that he had received a note from the governor’s staff earlier in the day saying that Kitzhaber was attempting to reach the secretary of state to “set up the transition.”
“I don’t know what that means,” Courtney said.
Kotek said later that the governor has been consumed by all the legal investigations and media inquiries.
“The work of the state has to go on,” she said, “and he’s not able to focus on that right now.”
“It has become clear to both of us that the ongoing investigations surrounding the governor and Cylvia Hayes have resulted in the loss of the people’s trust,” Kotek said.

It takes an awful lot of corruption to become “too corrupt” to be an Oregon Democrat, but somehow Kitzhaber’s done it!

Sounds like the typical Democratic template for governing.

    Fornication in the governor’s mansion?

After seeing Barry’s selfie stick, fornicating sounds almost normal.

Kitzhaber is a physician and IIRC, he was on the front lines years ago advocating for some sort of single-payer system for health care. His progressive bona fides are well established, which makes this peccadillo more interesting.

Meh. The successor, Kate Brown, is just as much a leftie as Kitzhaber; she’s from what Bush 41 called “Little Beirut”, which ranks up there with Seattle and San Fransisco as liberal bastions.

So, yeah, it’s sweet to see Kitzhaber go, but it won’t make much difference in Oregon. Too many effin’ Kalifornians emigrated north.

Never let a Rule 5 opportunity go to waste….

Of course as Oregon Expatriate Smitty could tell us, there is nothing really funny for those few conservatives still left in Oregon (I suppose a few still live out in Pendleton and those in Bend may survive on a few homesteads beyond the Portland hipsters who bought them out). Monica Wehby was the superior Senate candidate and was soundly defeated in a GOP national wave. Kitzy got reelected despite this scandal pending. Portlandia and its troika of Eugene and Corvailis control the state. And there will be no accounting for this personal failure of Kitzy and the Democrats.

I find the Oregon qualifier to be redundant. The Democratic Party is corrupt by definition. Ballot box stuffing, voter intimidation…

I have a client out in Pendleton. Big ‘ol redneck. The first time we talked he told me to get a gun and a horse and ride out of L.A. before the world ends. Which probably isn’t bad advice.

The media in Oregon made Wehby out to look like a raving nutjob. She’s a pediatric neurosurgeon, like Ben Carson, in fact she’s friends and colleagues with him.

Actually, out of his four gubernatorial wins, the only time that Kitzhaber got more than 51% of the vote was in his 1998 contest against Bill Sizemore, who was perceived as unreliable, dishonest, and gaming the system. He has always been eminently beatable, by the right candidate.

Oregon is not just geographically divided; in terms of the political parties, people are divided inside themselves, since the culture itself favors both liberal and conservative virtues. Our state constitution protects freedom of expression, not just speech, with the side effect that we have a lot of strip clubs; at the same time, we also have a healthy gun culture, with a lot of people accustomed to reducing their family expenditures by bringing home a deer or even an elk every year.

What’s pertinent here is that Oregonians have long been sick and tired of the ancient “good ol’ boys” network that rewards support with patronage — and our sensitivity to that issue is exactly what’s bringing him down now. He apparently thought to slide on the technicality that they weren’t married, but most people aren’t lawyers and don’t care.

Apparently Governor Kitzhaber doesn’t understand the definition of the word “lady.”

Oregon wasn’t bad when my family left for Germany in August of ’66 (lived in Albany). Kalifornians, however, were just starting to make inroads into the place. The locals hated SoCal refugees.
