Chilling With the 114th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C.
Greetings from the 21st Amendment Bar & Grill at the Holiday Inn Capitol. I just got back from “A Reception & Salute to the 114th Congress” sponsored by Insight America. The guests of honor were Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Mia Love and Rep. William Hurd, the three black Republican members of Congress, the latter two newly elected.
Insight America was founded in 2013 by former Rep. J.C. Watts with the goal of increasing the Republican Party’s appeal, through such measures as hiring young black conservatives as Capitol Hill staffers. “I am not offended by the words outreach, tolerance and diversity. I don’t see those as liberal code words,” Watts told Roll Call two years ago.
It was a wonderful event. Congresswoman Love told a story about being challenged by a young liberal who couldn’t believe that a black woman could be a Republican from Utah. “I refuse to fit the mold society tells me I have to fit into,” Congresswoman Love said.
Senator Scott, who had been the only black Republican in Congress prior to the election of Love and Hurd last November, told of crying “tears of joy” on Election Night, getting laughs as he admitted a selfish motive: “More targets [for liberals] to shoot at.”
More than 100 attended the event, which featured the inspiring music of Alyce Metallo and Ben Lashey of McLean Bible Church.
What a historic event this evening in the House with @SenatorTimScott, Rep. @HurdOnTheHill, and @RepMiaLove! Thank you Insight America!

The beard looks good. Makes me nostalgic for mine.
January 21st, 2015 @ 10:17 pm
Holy smokes, a beard! Looks good on you, grandpa!
January 21st, 2015 @ 10:20 pm
It does look good. You should grow your’s back if you miss it, it’s not like it’s a tattoo. I’ve kept my beard ever since I could grow one. My kids have never seen me without it not even in pictures.

TOT: did congress do that non-partisan seating last night?
January 21st, 2015 @ 10:26 pm
I’ve kept my moustache since I was 18. The beard comes and goes. I used to grow one annually, between the end of the World Series and Opening Day.
January 21st, 2015 @ 10:31 pm
Yeah, I did “No Shave November” and it came in white. Everybody said it looked “distinguished,” so I kept it. First time I’ve had a beard since 1992, when my twin sons were born.

It’s the cheapest and easiest way to change one’s appearance and you never have to regret it.
January 21st, 2015 @ 10:57 pm
You look like a movie star with the beard.
January 21st, 2015 @ 11:04 pm
Mean, just mean.
January 21st, 2015 @ 11:38 pm
Awww, it’s a little funny, huh?
I’d look a bit like this picture if I had a beard. And chest hair.
January 21st, 2015 @ 11:46 pm
RS,
You look like Bill Murray from “A Life Aquatic,”
January 22nd, 2015 @ 12:31 am
Thanks for sharing.

Minor point: Tim Scott is just as “recently elected” as Love and Hurd; he had previously been appointed to the seat after Jim DeMint resigned to take over at Heritage.
We don’t have great numbers of black members of Congress on our side, but we make it up in quality by comparison.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 1:56 am
While he was first an appointed senator he was plucked from the house seat he won in 2010.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 7:38 am
Whoa! Our host is revealed as a hippie!
January 22nd, 2015 @ 7:40 am
Had mine since I was twenty. That’s been a long time ago.

Did you have to do that?
January 22nd, 2015 @ 9:08 am
It also means NO DAILY SHAVING, which, for someone like me with very fair [shall we say: ‘fluorescent’] skin means a lot less blood loss.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 9:10 am
I think Stacy looks, like me, like a Civil War General.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 9:11 am
Weren’t you in The Band for the Rock Of Ages tour?
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:02 am
I read this quick and I thought you said grow your back hair. Well if you seen pictures of me, that is not a problem.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:03 am
As a conservative, I thought you would have a tough hide by now…
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:10 am
Personally, I regret growing a beard every time because I can’t grow one that’s not scraggly and lopsided. Plus, long hair and scraggly beard makes me look too much like Richard Stallman for my comfort. (Great software writer, not so great on personal appearance.)
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:39 am
You look like a Kentucky graduate.
: )
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:52 am
I is a proud University of Kentucky graduate!

Some things are simply necessary.

A member of the cult of St. Adolph of Rupp!

After a certain age, it will be white. You still have some pepper in yours. Mine is completely white, but I’m about 6 years older.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 12:52 pm
That’s about the life of mine. When I retire and don’t go to the field anymore, I prolly won’t grow it anymore.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 3:26 pm
Yep. Robert E. Lee.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 4:44 pm
Who’s postmortem RPMs have to be about a zillion when he sees Calipari’s “one and done” system.

Point Of Order:
M-I-Z-Z-O-U!
And yes, we suck at hoops this year, but Kim Anderson will bring us back to basketball Beulah Land!
January 22nd, 2015 @ 5:21 pm
You sure they weren’t saying “extinguished?”
January 22nd, 2015 @ 5:23 pm
Looks like an ad for one of those home depilation kits.
In this case, one with an industrial laser.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 5:24 pm
It was really nice of you to take pictures of your grandpa with Tim Scott.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 5:43 pm
So no rock-sharpened knife for you, eh?
January 22nd, 2015 @ 6:25 pm
But you needn’t regret growing it, just shave. What you regret is not growing to your satisfaction, since there’s nothing you can do about it, regret is pointless. In fact regret is generally useless in my opinion.
January 22nd, 2015 @ 7:25 pm
That needs a meme… I submit:
I DON’T ALWAYS WORK ON MY HUGELY SUCCESSFUL BLOG, BUT WHEN I DO, IT’S FOR FUN, PROFIT, AND THE DEFENCE OF WESTERN CIVILISATION!
January 22nd, 2015 @ 8:20 pm
Repeat after me, “Rowl wade BIFFLESTUFFEL!”
January 22nd, 2015 @ 11:33 pm
The beard has to go.
Makes RSM look 87.
