Rolling Stone’s @SabrinaRErdely has been so busy keeping us informed about how wealthy fratboys at elite universities routinely gang-rape 18-year-old girls . . . Wait, no. Actually, she hasn’t tweeted a single word in the past 18 days. We are nevertheless sure she’s been plenty busy, which explains why she hasn’t reported these stories:

We apologize for errors in the minor details we had to correct in these stories, but the “rape epidemic” on America’s college campuses is so rampant that Sabrina Rubin Erdley can’t keep up with it all.

    Not so fast. This is her fourth questionable story, two earlier ones already withdrawn and a third in real doubt, plus this one RS ‘won’t stand behind’ anymore.

    There seem to be no consequences for her fabrications so far. At least Glass and Jayson Blair were canned when they were first caught out.

    I haven’t even seen that RS has suspended her, have they?

    Nowadays the public schools teach children that ‘their truth is true for them’ and no one can challenge their beliefs, so to her it’s all true since she imagined it.

    Several of these cases have been entered months later. One at Washington & Lee started after the girl told her friends she had a good time with the guy, came back for more, but then saw him kissing someone else and decided to make the complaint.

    He was kicked out in a kangaroo proceeding, but is suing.

    I consider it most likely that this entire tale was fabricated first by Jackie and then by Jackie and Erdely. It was only a matter of time before it became a police investigation after publication. What made Jackie and Erdely as well as whomever else was involved in this hoax believe that this hoax could withstand scrutiny over time.

    No doubt Jackie invented a tale – of forced oral sodomy by five men. She gave her friends two names, which she also gave to the U a year later, which were phony.

    Erdely promised her she would remain anonymous, that her story would be part of the bigger story about abuse at UVA, jazzed it up for her with seven guys, vaginal rape, broken glass, and blood. She didn’t check with the friends or the accused because she knew it was all made up, she made much of it up herself.

    Jackie is a disturbed young woman trying to get attention. She didn’t file any false report with the cops, nor name any living person as a perp. Erdely manipulated her and was planning a big score from it.

    When Glass and Jayson Blair were caught it was their entire bodies of work called out at the same time. Furthermore they both worked for publications that felt they had reputations to protect.

    All of the victims of these kangaroo courts should sue. The Universities haven’t a leg to stand on due process wise.

    What made Jackie and Erdely as well as whomever else was involved in this hoax believe that this hoax could withstand scrutiny over time.

    They thought that they deserved to be believed.

    Let’s go back to when the accounting consultancies went from the Big Five to the Big Four. White-collar crimes were newsworthy at that point, and I remember reading a former prosecutor with the DoJ talking about how it typically took six months for those kind of people to realize that they’d even done anything wrong.

    Six months! Six months after committing the coverup that would convince a jury that they had a guilty mind!

    It is apparently perfectly normal for sane people to convince themselves that they’re doing the right thing by lying and cheating. I read later in an article about marital infidelity that they basically all convince themselves that they deserve it, and put two and two together.

    The marital cheats deserved their fun in the sun. The accounting cheats deserved their fortune. The journalism cheats deserved their fame. It is all of a piece.

    True. But if they had been found out in several fabrications along the way, they wouldn’t have lasted as long as they did. Erdely hasn’t been disciplined at all, for multiple offenses now, as far as we know – possibly because her editor knew fully well the whole thing was phony.

    At the risk of becoming obnoxious, I have to point out again that Erdely is producing a product that feeds a very specific kink, namely the “erotic/aversive” mixed-type rape fantasy. A simple explanation would be that her editor is enabling her due to sharing that kink.

    The average lefty editor/publisher can always find other cute young reporterettes to write Truthiness to Power without carrying a history of sloppiness (at best) or fraud; no sense having his publication’s work subjected to higher scrutiny due to the writer’s history.

    Mrs Erdely is not only toast, but she’s toast which has been dropped on the floor, buttered side down, right beside the cat’s litter box.

    Hope you’re right, but I tend to think that the ability – nay, tendency – to tell fantastic tales so long as they support The Narrative is not exactly a bad thing in lefty editor / publisher eyes.
