God Bless Senator Mike Lee

Half the battle is showing up. The other half is staying engaged:
. . .as rotten as the CROmnibus before us is, I want to state for the record that this week leaves me with nothing but optimism. Optimism about the prospect we have for real reform and revival in the coming years. The miserable process we’ve witnessed this week represents the last gasping throes of a discredited Washington status quo. 10 years ago, this bill would not have been controversial. 5 years ago, an easy majority would have been purchased with earmarks. This week, with the full weight of both party’s leaderships it barely made it over the finish line.
I hope that Boehnerdict Arnold hears these words, and understands the Mene, Mene, Teqel, Upharsin behind them.
Update: more positive thinking from Da Tech Guy.

Sen. Lee gives the right way of thinking about it. Fall back here, and come out fighting next month with the majority in both chambers.

It’s important that our politicians have optimism about the future. Unfortunately this requires that Senator Lee be optimistic about the goals and motives of his party. I do not share that optimism.
December 13th, 2014 @ 2:27 pm
I entirely agree. Frankly, I’m not sure what the goals and motives of the GOP are these days aside from:
(A) Keep their phoney-baloney jobs and;
(B) Head for the cliff but just a little slower than the dems
It would be interesting to ask Lee, “OK, champ: just what is your plan for the next session? Just how do you plan to come out swinging?”
My guess is that they will offer some smokescreen bills that they intend will never pass, make a lot of speeches, and then go about business as usual.
Bah.
December 13th, 2014 @ 3:35 pm
I heard Kevin Brady (R) Texas interviewed on the radio last night and he articulated a logical conservative reason to vote for the cromnibus bill, which he did. He said shutting down the government is the wrong way to do it. He said that, for example, public support for obamacare goes up by double-digits when the media gets done telling the public about how the Republicans want to shut down government to stop obamacare. Instead, he said, the liberal programs like that and Obama’s immigration EO, etc, need to be attacked and taken apart legislatively, and they are going to do that after the first of the year when the Rs take over both houses. So there’s that.
I’d feel a lot better about it if these same republicans hadn’t decided to keep Boehner as speaker.
December 13th, 2014 @ 6:06 pm
If we pass a shorter term CR now, we will be passing the rest of it early in the year as a CR again. There is simply not time to produce nine appropriations bills when we are already in the year we are ‘budgeting’ for. We will be crafting a hodge-podge bill for Homeland Security to restrict Obama’s amnesty plans, which will amount to the CR for the rest of the FY for most of the department, along with restrictive language on how money can be spent.
But, if it makes you feel better to demagogue the whole thing, go ahead.
And do keep up the schoolyard taunts for Boehner and McConnell. That will ensure that serious people don’t pay any attention to you at all.
December 13th, 2014 @ 6:40 pm
Are you suggesting the budgets hadn’t already been written and passed by the house? it should be a simple matter of cutting each already written appropriations bill in half (erring on scrooge side) and passing them before March of 2015. Obviously it’s isn’t quite that easy but not by much.
December 13th, 2014 @ 6:42 pm
That’s going to be the substantial case. You’re not going to get a clean fix. It’s going to be a dirty, incremental/excremental fix. That is: politics.
December 13th, 2014 @ 7:48 pm
Ah, the old, “serious, you guys!” ploy. That takes me back.
Perhaps a tee shirt with that on it will show them.
December 13th, 2014 @ 7:53 pm
O/T: The lefty Brits are jumping on the Feinstein #WestShaming bandwagon. Evidently some British “spies” claim they “may have witnessed” the CIA engaging in “mistreatment.” Why, some of them may have been in the same building! It’s over at Breitbart London. (I won’t link it here coz of the off-ness of the topic. Just had to write this somewhere, for because.)
December 13th, 2014 @ 7:58 pm
It’s an odd thing about organizational behavior, though. You have to act like the thing you want to become, in order to become that thing.
It’s a variant on what Rush likes to tell people: if you want to be successful, hang around with the kind of people who are successful, and not the kids busy having fun. or the grumpy workers who only ever complain about the company.
So Lee is working to make it apparent that Conservatives do exist, and do have a lot of say in what happens in Congress, no matter what the leadership may think. This is how it’s done. You step up and make it so, you don’t hide behind the crowds and hope the leadership wont’ punish you for speaking out.
December 13th, 2014 @ 9:28 pm
I agree that it can’t all be done at once. But… Will they really try?
December 27th, 2014 @ 12:37 am
[…] as Senator Mike Lee noted, the recent shenanigans with CROmnibus aren’t going unnoticed. While it would be silly […]
