    Her career has been a testament to the power of branding, connections, incumbency, and luck in politics. She was a tyro real estate agent elected to the legislature in 1979 (at age 25) on her father’s name. She lost her first election in 1995 and her career might have ended in 1996 with the loss of her 1st race for Congress if it had not been for some dubious dealings with the counting of ballots (at a time when people could still write that off as local to Louisiana).

    She’s 60 and it was clear last month her chances were minimal. You’d think she’d want to exit stage right with dignity. Then you recall that George McGovern is dead, Sargent Shriver is dead, Thomas Foley is dead, Jimmy Carter’s past 90; and Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, and George Mitchell are octogenarians; dignity and decency are something prominent Democratic politicos seldom display any more.

    She hasn’t sold real estate in decades and has no home in Louisiana, so that’s to be expected, unless the wife of Pat Roberts (R – [chuckles] western Kansas) has an opening for her in her NoVa real estate business.

    Her husband is a DC real estate broker, although his most lucrative business has come from lobbyists and donors seeking Mary’s favors. They will need a new scam now.

    Have you seen the flyers distributed yesterday throughout ‘Democratic’ areas? Telling folks welfare, food stamps, and Medicaid will be taken away if she loses.

    In LA, oil and gas interests converge at the national and state level. I imagine most of the money in her PAC came from those interests. She then donates some of that money to anti-oil PACs. Surely at least one of those interests will pay her to continue lying for them.

    Reminds me of LBJ anecdote about Democrats in Texas. Two party men were registering voters in the cemetery, one reading the names off the headstones while the other wrote them down. One old stone was weathered and worn, and bore a long Polish name with few vowels.

    The fellow strained his eyes but couldn’t make it out. ‘Guess we’ll have to skip this one,’ he said. ‘Oh, no,’ replied the other, ‘he has as much right to vote as anyone else!’

    The sad part of that story is that based on LBJ’s history of vote fraud, it may well be a true story.

    Capitol Hill about a politician who was in trouble. The pol was likely
    finished, he said. I was surprised. Can’t he change things and dig
    himself out? No. “People do what they know how to do.” Politicians don’t
    have a vast repertoire. When they get in a jam they just do what
    they’ve always done, even if it’s not working anymore.
