Emphasis mine:
“Assuming Chris really does plan to dumb it down in the name of clicks, what’s maddening is the way he has betrayed the premise on which he bought it. It’s like buying a historic Victorian mansion with the promise of preserving it — and then carving it into condos two years later,” one former longtime TNR staffer told POLITICO.
“I hope Chris realizes how much intellectual firepower he’s losing here — and how hard it is to fake intellectual substance,” the former staffer said.
I just love it when these Progressives get all emotional about the destruction of institutions. Given that this has been their stock in trade since the Summer of Love, culminating in six years of #OccupyResoluteDesk making a total cock-up of the Presidency, one is left to wonder why the Lefties can’t just enjoy their liberation from “intellectual substance”. This is another suck-is-the-new-cool call from the manor house down to the the peasants working the fields. Dig it, lackeys.
Progressivism is not a creative movement. It is the combustion of traditional, positive, moral values in a propaganda machine for the production of political power. Once all of the moral values of the culture have been burned, Progress will generally collapse into the kind of thuggery most recently seen in Ferguson, MO.

Intellectual liberalism died when it became liberal government. The left could come up with all sorts of learned articles by great scholars telling us what great things would happen if we followed their policy ideas, but once we did follow their policy ideas, we found out that they just didn’t work.

Well, not quite: TNR was slightly more moderate in its leftism, and thereby at least seemed to have some sense of maturity. But being a more mature supporter of bad ideas doesn’t make either you or the ideas better.

Given that it’s readership had been halved in this century, it won’t be missed by that man people.

Owens can’t seem to get past the war of northern aggression.
Hanson can’t seem to get past the Westphalian nation-state and is missing a lot.
Goldberg – the less said the better. I went round and round with him back 2002 when the Paleos were making a monkey of him without breaking a sweat. Writing “Liberal fascism” matured him some, but he still a very long way to go. About every time I think he’s on the right road, he goes off in the ditch. He’s still quite callow.
Kurtz and Siepp write little that piques my interest. onsequently, I can’t say much about either.
The only real giant they had, Steyn, has been thrown under the bus because of the Mann suit. His last posting on NRO is nearly a year old. Williamson writes some stuff that’s good, but he does not even approach the stature and ability of Mark Steyn. Lowry’s treatment of Steyn demonstrates what he already showed him to be when he defenestrated the Derb. To not put too fine a point on it, Rich Lowry is a coward.

You’re under the illusion that the alt-right makes a contribution to public discourse. It does not, and it never has.
December 8th, 2014 @ 9:15 pm
You’ll have to define “alt-right.” My circle has always referred to the NR crowd, and Buckley, as the “respectable right.” The left always liked Buckley and his crowd for the people they dissed, not that they were right wing. Buckley was pretty much useless, in reality.

Sorry, meant O’Sullivan.

O’Sullivan was purged by Buckley because of his stance on immigration. Buckley had gone seriously downhill and was not able to hide what he actually was any longer.
Rich Lowry is still a coward.
