Progressives Cheer: Sterilizing Poor People Is Totally Awesome!
Posted on | July 19, 2014 | 72 Comments
Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) was the primary weapon to prevent poor people — mainly black and Latino teenage girls — from reproducing in the Colorado Family Planning Initiative (CFPI). Funded by a “confidential private donor” and operated through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Title X Family Planning Program, CFPI not only paid for LARC — contraceptive implants and intra-uterine devices (IUDs) — but also paid up to $675 for each vasectomy and $2,600 for each tubal ligation (female sterilization) performed in Colorado’s Title X clinics since 2009.
Well, guess what they found out? You shove enough free contraception at poor teenage girls, and you get fewer babies:
Fertility rates among low-income women aged 15–24 were compared with expected trends. Abortion rates and births among high-risk women were tracked, and the numbers of infants receiving services through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) were examined. . . .
By 2011, caseloads had increased by 23%, and LARC use among 15–24-year-olds had grown from 5% to 19%. Cumulatively, one in 15 young, low-income women had received a LARC method, up from one in 170 in 2008. Compared with expected fertility rates in 2011, observed rates were 29% lower among low-income 15–19-year-olds and 14% lower among similar 20–24-year-olds. In CFPI counties, the proportion of births that were high-risk declined by 24% between 2009 and 2011; abortion rates fell 34% and 18%, respectively, among women aged 15–19 and 20–24. Statewide, infant enrollment in WIC declined 23% between 2010 and 2013.
Conclusion: Evil is more effective when it’s free — and the progressives at Daily Kos think this is totally awesome!

Hell is anything but poetic. It’s just simply…Hell. It’s ghastly beyond imagination.

I believe I am keeping up. I guarantee that these teens who are opting for semi-permanent sterilization are facing some kind of coercion to do it. That’s the first step towards forced sterilization in the future.

Truly ridiculous arguments unconnected to anything I posted. Children do extremely poorly in single-parent situations. We should do what we can to avoid accidental pregnancies. This is a step in the right direction. Those of you who are against it, how many of you are going to go adopt the babies who don’t have daddies or financial support?

There are also mass beheadings in the Middle East. I don’t think that means there are mass beheadings in Cleveland. Incentivizing people out of single motherhood of children they cannot afford. Yes, what a terrible thing. Oh, they should just give up sex, some of you advise. Right. That’s going to happen. Right after the tooth fairy brings you the downpayment on a new house.

They are not ridiculous arguments. The minute you start talking about sterilization then you are asking for the state to take rights and freedom from people. Since what if someone doesnt want to do it right now, or we start to see laws passed again for the good of the community, or that we have someone who is in their teens that is sterilized then becomes successful in thier 20s or 30s who want to have kids later. Those procedures are not cheap. The minute you start to talk about doing so because someone is of a lower economic class than you, the specter of that older form of Eugenics that raged all over the progressives of Europe and the US.
Do read up on those statements and the history of the eugenics push in the US and UK at the turn of the 19th and 20th century before it was tainted with the horrors of what the Japanese and Nazis were doing in the 30s and 40s. There were a number of people from Bertrand Russell to Theodore Roosevelt and even leading economic philosophers like John Keynes all talk about eugenics as the way to remove social ills.
You are saying the same thing by disguising it as caring about the children both born and unborn. Which is the same sort of lines that were peddled to get the voters to accept the laws that committed forcrd sterilization against poor, alcoholism, criminal behavior, and being poor (they looked at family history and argued that the poor will always be poor unless we eliminated with the mothers and fathers).

Just more photographic evidence in this article that Eugenics movement attempted to remove social ills like poverty, alcoholism and even rampant hormones could be removed by sterilization by government fiat of those considered to have a family trait of those features in the same way that blond, blue eyes, heart disease, height, and slew of other truly genetic stuff. It isn’t pretty and all based on piss – poor science. This is the stuff that gives us who truly care a worry about making policy decisions on poor science.

Before there was a birth control
pill most people waited until marriage or at least engagement before indulging in sexual intercourse. There were a lot less illegitimate children born then than now. Single-parent families are nearly six times more likely to be poor than were married families. I suggest we return to teaching self-control and promote marriage. It worked for centuries.
Your augment fails

Hubris.
“Well, I have a billion dollars. There’s NO WAY I could have gotten that without being super, super smart! So, therefore, my bigotry isn’t bigotry; it’s actually a plan to fix things!”

Amy, your pragmatism is based entirely on the idea that it’s the left wing’s world and we’re just living in it.
You’re asking us what steps we should do when they’re playing the cultural tune.

It’s important to note that many young women who get abortions are “advised” into it by parents and boyfriends.
The left obsesses over “choice” (their euphemism for abortion) and tell us that no one should be forced to give birth… while remaining utterly silent when women are pushed into abortions against their will.

I disagree with the target. Sterilizing welfare recipients and violent criminals, on the other hand, is a policy long overdue.

I fail to see the problem here.
They offer people money in exchange for their ability to reproduce. It’s an offer, nothing else.
Nobody gets forced or bullied on getting the surgery performed, and when somebody thinks it’s worth it, let them. People who think their bloodline is worth that little (or simply want to remain childfree and consider the money a bonus), let them. In the end, everyone wins.
It’s the most ethical variant of population control and entirely voluntary. In fact this project should be extended to shitholes like Palestine and North Africa to get hold of the population explosion in these territories. Not like anything gets better when you have to dispense a finite amount of room and resources on an infinite number of people. We have seen what that leads to…

Thanks for clarifying the leftie viewpoint that babies are a disease.

Right. Because throwing money at it is fixing the problem.

Yeah. Because family cohesion is just a super strong point in these communities. #derp

I’m sure that is how they all rationalize it. But it is driven by bigotry nonetheless.
