1. Putin is making nice to Ukraine because he has moved the borders and gauged the next fight as too costly at the moment, while he desperately needs the billions Ukraine owes for natural gas. His leverage is limited, as the pipelines to Europe, Russia’s biggest customers, cross Ukraine – so a cutoff would have to be universal, and Russia needs the cash flow.
2. Japan is shooting arrows in the air. The best they can hope is that they do not fall back upon them. They should know by now the futility of the artificially low interest rate, high government spending, high deficits model. It just cannot work. And while established corporations have improved their profitability, the formation of new private capital is effectively impeded by this policy.
3. McDaniel had the race won until the nursing home scandal. He handled it poorly, if he and the campaign are truly completely innocent, his reactions were disastrous (and he still barely lost). My contact in the area (not active in politics other than interested) relays the theory that he was trying to get the rumor about Cochran and his executive assistant promoted into the media without leaving fingerprints, and the idiots assigned to plant the story came up with the lame-brained and offensive idea of a picture of Mrs. Cochran on their own.
The “Democrats crossed over” whine – which made Drudge – is also not supported by evidence. My pal says there wasn’t any big action in black precincts, but much higher than expected turnout in Republican precincts.

That and a hundred or so bus loads of Democrat voters turns the trick every time.
The minute the GOP establishment started appealing to Democrat voters to defend an incumbent against the expressed will of the voters they lost all credibility with me.
You and your “pal”, too.

It’s my impression from the various news items that the “third arrow” consists not only of a lowered corporate tax, but a scrapping of regulations and removal of tax shelters from various inefficient businesses. We’ll see if Abenomics is more than Krugman’s wet dream written in hiragana.

My pal was for McDaniel. I would have been, but for the potential bomb to drop. It was a bit too close, and his reaction has not been that of someone with nothing to hide.
My main concern is keeping the seat.
You are complaining about a rule that has been in force in most of the South for over a century. We don’t register by party.
But you think it’s unethical to ask for eligible voters to turn out for your candidate?
What color is the sky in your world?
June 26th, 2014 @ 3:57 am
I’ve heard the “deregulation” song before, but the book of rules keeps getting bigger.
But private capital won’t jump in because of a few rule changes, interest rates must rise. Reward must equal risk, or no one takes the risk.
