Libertarians Are Hitler or Something
Posted on | June 11, 2014 | 87 Comments
Eric Cantor was the only Republican Jew in Congress, so when he lost a GOP primary to economics professor Dave Brat, the Left instantly created a narrative that this represented some kind of neo-Nazi tendency of Brat’s libertarian-leaning Tea Party supporters. There are a few obvious problems with this claim, of course:
- Libertarianism is the exact opposite of Nazi totalitarianism;
- It is the Left that supports terroristic Jew-haters in the Middle East and it was the Left that spent eight years claiming that the Bush administration was in the thrall of Jewish “neocons” who allegedly promoted the Iraq War for nefarious purposes;
and - Some analysts say that Brat beat Cantor because of a surge of Democrats voting for Brat in Virginia’s “open” GOP primary.
But the Left doesn’t care about facts, and neither do the mouthpieces of the GOP Establishment at the Wall Street Journal.

Well said; except, I wouldn’t say the Tea Party leans towards Libertarians. It does definitely have libertarians in it, but the overall is pure fiscal & constitutional conservatism, with emphasis on traditional foreign policy strengths & a new push to reduce the size of the Fed.
It’s not about Ron Paul’s isolationism & other irrational tidbits.
June 11th, 2014 @ 9:54 pm
I lost any libertarian sympathies I may have once had when I learnt that Libertarians had been actively pandering to the homosexuals and paedophiles from the beginning!

Since the last time I read your stuff, I’ve been racking my brain to remember any libertarians who “pandered” to pedophiles. I can’t remember any. “Consenting adults” is a big priority.
As for “pandering” to homosexuals, well, we also “pander” to Jews, women, Rotarians, Red Sox fans, and classic car owners. Not to mention people with piercings, people with tattoos, people with nine toes, and almost anyone else you can name.
If you’re threatened by “live and let live,” by all means run away.

With all due respect, this is another internet site giving credit to the internet. Proof is required.
Jenny Beth Martin also tried to horn in on the credit, acting as if the “local activists” were somehow due to her. She’s a prime offender, and I respect Ingraham and Stranahan for finally beginning to call out these phony “Tea Party” groups that keep the money for their own salaries.
June 12th, 2014 @ 12:39 am
I think the attraction between the Libertarians and the paedophiles was mutual… There were common concerns about age-of-consent laws violating “children’s civil rights” and such! And the Libertarians were espousing homosexual “marriage” long before the Left did so!
June 12th, 2014 @ 1:03 am
They’ve had a thing called the, “House Conservatives Project,” though.
Also, he personally endorses folks (like Cornyn, which I can sort of understand).
Some folks who lost recently had supposedly not asked Sarah Palin to endorse them. So I don’t know if these folks are trying to squeak by without owing anyone any favors, or what.
June 12th, 2014 @ 2:22 am
Again, that is an assertion like Breitbart.com’s, unsupported by anything. It could be true, it could not.
June 12th, 2014 @ 2:25 am
True, I meant to mention that Brat rejects any of the labels. He considers himself a traditional conservative Republican with those values. He seeks less of a revolution and more of a restoration.
June 12th, 2014 @ 2:28 am
I never saw or heard a word about foreign policy at any TP rally I attended or saw reported. It was anti-bailout (for individuals OR companies), anti-debt, anti-spending, and once ObamaCare was passed, anti-OC.
That’s what the movement was about when it was pure grassroots and had 60% approval. It was when people began adding their own preferences onto the list and taking the name to raise money that the public approval plunged.
June 12th, 2014 @ 2:30 am
On the contrary, Libertarians reject the age of majority laws, including the rights to contract and give sexual consent. They don’t “pander” to pedophiles or gays by advertising to them, but they give them all the license they want, so it’s a distinction without a difference.
June 12th, 2014 @ 5:18 am

I’m a WSJ subscriber. There is a distinct difference in the reporting at NYT, for example, and WSJ. I don’t find the WSJ to mislead and deceive, as Epstein did here. NYT does that all the time.
June 12th, 2014 @ 9:10 am
These are two different issues. The only one that I’m denying is that libertarians pander to pedophiles.
You want to use it as the modern political equivalent of blood libel.
It’s probably because I am pagan, but I’ve found keeping minors at an arm’s length when it comes to religion and sexuality solves more problems than it causes. It’s one of those necessary compromises that keeps neighbors.
June 12th, 2014 @ 9:20 am
I think you’ll find that most small “l” libertarians like me consider it a minor issue, if at all.
I will point out that the laws are not self consistent. Driving at 16 (some farm states allowed it at 14 in rural areas), voting and draft eligibility at 18, drinking age of 21, well, those are just some of the best known examples.
I’ve pointed out before that the whole extended childhood thing is mostly a post WWII American urban phenomena. Attitudes towards “child brides” were very different a few generations ago.

Dunetz’s post is pretty good. Minor point, however. The points out of what he calls the Establishment Playbook, ain’t. Those are things the GOPe hates as much as the Dims.
June 12th, 2014 @ 3:43 pm
[…] Libertarians Are Hitler or Something […]
June 12th, 2014 @ 6:01 pm
Just because you reject a given position, or deemphasize it, doesn’t mean it isn’t the “Libertarian” position – it IS and has been since the founding. Just like the Pauls can be pro-life while the “Libertarian” position is pro-abortion, or “freedom” to kill.
But in your 2nd paragraph, you seem to hedge. So I take that as about as close to an admission as Libertarians will ever make.
June 12th, 2014 @ 6:23 pm
Can you tell me what the “American” position is on taxes? Does every single American agree with that? What about public schools? And immigration?
I call myself libertarian with a small “l” because when I say “classic liberal” most folks in the U.S. don’t know what I am talking about. It has nothing to do with a political party and everything to do with liberty.
I believe that the freedom to choose is the mark of an adult human. Make of that what you will.
June 12th, 2014 @ 7:19 pm
Drink Moar! It will dull the pain.
June 12th, 2014 @ 11:26 pm
Libertarianism was from its founding based on a broad spectrum of specific areas where -as you would put it – “freedom” is the policy. This is one of them. Your earlier answer seemed to agree that you should be free to bonk a “consenting” child.
You confuse freedom with license. Grow up.
June 13th, 2014 @ 7:34 am
Excellent parody, even if that ran headfirst into Poe’s Law.
June 13th, 2014 @ 9:26 am
Classic liberalism predates the founding of the American republic. That is why I distinguish between “Libertarianism” and “libertarianism.” Big “L” versus small “l.” Party platform versus individual responsibility.
If you’ll look closely at what I’ve written, I’ve always stressed “consenting adults” when it comes to sexual practices.
I pointed out that even the All Wise Forces of Government & Society® can’t decide when a child is responsible or not.
