Dance teacher Nichol Marie Phelps molested 15-year-old girl.

Readers may remember the case of Nichol Marie Phelps, the married 30-year-old dance teacher in Florida who said she would leave her husband for the “hot” 15-year-old student she molested in 2012. Phelps was sentenced to prison last week:

Though she’s only 17, the young dancer testified Friday that her childhood ended long ago.
“The child within me is truly gone and has been for a really long time,” the teen told her former dance instructor, Nichol Phelps. “With your selfish games, you stole someone’s childhood, their innocence.”

(“Innocence”? Isn’t that an oppressive patriarchal concept?)

The testimony came during a four-hour hearing Friday at the Orange County Courthouse, during which Circuit Judge Mike Murphy sentenced Phelps, of Cape Coral, to 8 1/2 years in prison, followed by sex-offender probation. . . .

(Eight-and-a-half years? Homophobia!)

Friday’s hearing featured emotional testimony from both families. Phelps’ husband and mother described her as a devout Christian and loving mom of two, whose children rely on her presence and care.
“I am so sorry,” Phelps told Murphy. “Please, think of my family.”
Phelps and her defense portrayed the teen as the aggressor. Phelps testified that the girl made advances which “should have been handled in a mature manner, and they were not.” . . .

(Uh, the 15-year-old was “the aggressor” who “made advances”? How many sex offenders in Florida prisons tried that excuse?)

“I hate you, but I loved you,” the teen told Phelps in her testimony. “That’s what I struggle with the most…. You hurt me.”
She added: “You will not take from me who I am today, because today I love myself… I am no longer a victim, I am a survivor.”

Kaitlyn Hunt could not be reached for comment.

    I’m not blaming anybody. I’m saying she was a willing participant in this affair. You really expect any logical person to believe that at 15 she’s a victim, and probably in less than a year at 16, she’s a legal adult, and suddenly capable of all the decisions she wasn’t capable of just a short time ago? That’s absurd. And what’s emotional is your moral outrage over something like this. It’s not that I want to see social structures destroyed, I just dont care about them, and dont have a fit when I hear things like this.

    That’s your problem, right there. Because there’s some obvious blame to be assigned here.

    The contact and grooming started at 13, according to the reports I read.

    Oh, well, what’s the diff between 13 and 14, right? And 14, 15? Same same. And 15, 16? Hey, Some people are more mature!

    13 and 26? (When it apparently started?) Hey, that’s close enough, right?

    “That’s absurd.”

    No, it’s not, and not with this sort of differential.

    There are all sorts of bright lines in the law. This one isn’t even that close.

    Your defense of the predator (who might be deserving of pity, but not absolution of these crimes) is the absurdity.

    You fail to understand the entire concept of “statutory rape”.

    Yannow, for the most part, I don’t buy into the “rape culture” nonsense.

    But if you keep talking, I might have to admit that maybe there’s some real substance to the claim that there is one.

    It’s amazing how many people meet Jesus in the processing area at the jail. Just staggering.

    (Don’t suggest to wandering Jehovah’s Witnesses that they’ll probably find Jesus there. They won’t understand.)

    Actually, she would not be a legal adult at age 16.

    She would be able to legally drive. But she would not be allowed to vote, sign contracts, smoke, drink alcohol, own real property, sue or be sued in her own name, etc.

    At the age of 16, she would be legally allowed to have consensual sex with someone who was up to 23 years old in the State of Florida. If the older person were older than 23, should would have be 18 for the sexual activity to be legal. So even if she were 16 when it happened, the dance teacher’s actions would still be a felony.
