USCU Lesbian Professor Lisa Johnson Described ‘Serious Mental Illness’

Posted on | March 31, 2014 | 93 Comments

Professor Merri Lisa Johnson.

The director of the University of South Carolina Upstate (USCU) Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS) suffers from a “serious mental illness” and in 2010 described herself as a “newlywed lesbian” whose partner was apparently her former student.

Professor Merri Lisa Johnson published a 2010 book about her struggles with borderline personality disorder. The description of her partner in that book appears to fit a young “butch” lesbian who graduated from USCU in 2008, two years after Professor Johnson joined the faculty of the school in Spartanburg, S.C.

USCU became the focus of controversy when it was reported that the school would host a performance of “How to Be a Lesbian in 10 Days or Less” next week as part of the CWGS-hosted symposium, “Bodies of Knowledge.” When asked by Campus Reform reporter Lauren Cooley “what percentage of the funding” for the symposium “was coming from the university,” Professor Johnson replied: “Until you call and ask how much money has been spent on heterosexual literature, I’m not going to answer that question.”

In her 2010 book, Girl in Need of a Tourniquet: Memoir of a Borderline Personality, Professor Johnson describes herself as a “psycho girlfriend” with a history of dysfunctional relationships with both men and women: “Johnson combines her late-in-life coming out story (between ages 31-37) with the story of what amounts to a nervous breakdown as the result of an affair with a married lesbian colleague.” That affair “prompted her to seek professional help,” apparently around the time Professor Johnson  left Coastal Carolina University to become director of USCU-CWGS in 2006. An article about the book describes Professor Johnson:

A newlywed lesbian-after-marriage, Johnson currently resides in South Carolina with her partner Stace and their two loyal shih tzus.  The mixed species pack of four shares a 1920s-era craftsman bungalow fondly known among family and friends as The Haney-Johnson Halfway House for the Bright but Broken-Hearted.

Stacey Haney was one of Professor Johnson’s most honored students at USCU, receiving one of four Campus Consciousness-Raising Awards for the 2006-2007 school year and also winning an Award for Scholarly Achievement in Women’s and Gender Studies for the 2007-08 school year. Professor Johnson selected the annual CWGS award winners in her role as the center’s director. Haney served as president of the student group Upstate Feminists, and in 2008 presented a paper at the Wofford College Conference on Gender entitled, “Butch is Back: The Marginalization of Butch Feminists Across the Feminist and Queer Communities.” Haney, who graduated from USCU in December 2008, subsequently served as a teaching assistant at CWGS and in 2009-2010 took graduate courses at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, researching “new theoretical approaches for understanding transgendered identity and embodiment.”

Professor Johnson has edited feminist anthologies, including Jane Sexes It Up: True Confessions of Feminist Desire (2002) and Third Wave Feminism and Television: Jane Puts It in a Box (2007).

In an article last fall, Professor Johnson described her “queer feminist insistence on the importance, validity, and complexity of women’s pleasure” and her “Marxist feminist distrust of pleasure under patriarchy,” adding that “teaching Women’s and Gender Studies 101 since fall 2006 . . . has firmed up my radical side.”

The National Institutes for Mental Health describes borderline personality disorder (BPD) as “a serious mental illness marked by unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. . . . People with this disorder also have high rates of co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and eating disorders, along with self-harm, suicidal behaviors, and completed suicides.”

That’s because the left have done an absolutely excellent job in co-opting the definition. When feminism meant seeking equality of opportunity and compensation for women, most people saw that is simple fairness. In that way, Sarah Palin is a feminist in that she had an equal opportunity to run for Governor of Alaska, and give the voters their chance to decide; once elected, she was paid the same as a male Governor would have been.

That would be the definition of a conservative feminist: a belief in equal opportunity. What the “professional feminists” have done is to convert the definition into one in which women are supposed to be guaranteed success, and protected from men and normal sexuality.

To continue the thought: Conservative women who mistakenly embrace the “feminist” label usually do so because they think of the word as synonymous with female professional achievement (wrong) or with respect for women (wrong again).

Feminists (i.e., Marxist lesbians) have done a splendid job of indoctrinating young women into believing that all men are their enemies, so that a collective movement of identity politics is necessary for women to achieve anything.

From this deliberate disinformation, women get the wrong idea that they are feminists fighting “sexual harassment” and “discrimination” in group solidarity, rather than individuals experiencing commonplace rudeness and unfairness — human nature — which cannot be eliminated by coercion, but which serve the Left as permanent grievances in the same way as poverty and racism.

The Left never solves problems. Rather, the Left exploits problems. Once you understand that, their propaganda cannot influence you.

Exploits, imagines, exacerbates, creates, aggravates, devises, manufactures, magnifies, astroturfs, inflames…

I’m sure I’ve missed some, but as you say, “solves” or “helps with” are surely not on the list.

In truth, ‘Stace’ is less faggy sounding than ‘Stacy’ – I have a niece named Stacy.

It is the semantic problem inherent in words like “equality” and “fairness.” Because they can connote so many different things–ear of the listener, as it were–they can be used/misused with abandon. The Left is particularly adept at this, of course, in order to assume control of the populace by using people’s misunderstanding of the terms being used.

The starting point of any discussion about any topic of import should be on defining important terms, because unless there is agreement on the definitions, there can be no real agreement on any conclusions. It’s what Jeff Goldstein talks about in his posts on language.

Personality disorders are really not illness in the classical sense (a specific condition that prevents your body or mind from working normally.)

Most people with personality disorders have minds that function just fine, they are merely varying degrees of assholes.

And, like all assholes, there is no effective treatment that can substantially alter their personality – you are what you are.

Not that there is no reason to try to be better, more that having a ‘diagnosis’ tends one towards having an excuse.

Yes and no. To be perceived personality disorders require some sort of exhibited behavior. But disorder can exist in the absence of exhibited behavior.

Many disorders start with a misunderstanding or misapprehension of external stimuli. Cluster A disorders (Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal) being the classic examples. But also being the classic discriminants, since the disorders do not rise to the level of the mental illnesses like schizophrenia.

The important thing to remember is that these personality traits are things we ALL possess to one degree or another. It is only when the trait appears so strongly that it begins to adversely affect the person’s function that it gets deemed a ‘disorder.’

There are plenty of personality disorder tests available on line. Take one or two and you’ll see what type of tendencies you may posses. You’ll probably also recognize that you’ve ‘been that way’ for most if not all of your remembered life (barring any major trauma or life altering events.)

Given that the percentage of gay people who report some form of childhood sexual abuse is substantially higher than the rest of the population that correlation is not surprising.

Honestly, I have no idea what she means. Remember, she works in an ALL-FEMALE department of a UNIVERSITY where the faculty is dominated by LIBERALS.

So … who are these people trying to impose the burden of “emotional labor” on her?

It damn sure ain’t right-wing GOP theocrats, but this is how feminism works, see? Whatever pisses you off becomes a grievance against the scapegoated oppressors, even if they had nothing to do with the source of your grievance.
