Russia has vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution that declared a planned referendum on the status of Ukraine’s Crimea region “can have no validity” and urged nations and international organisations not to recognise it.

“This is a sad and remarkable moment,” Samantha Power, the American ambassador to the United Nations, said after the vote by the 15-member Security Council.

I’m fond of saying that the U.N. is slightly better than no U.N. From the standpoint of the Ukraine, one is unsure what difference, at this point, it would make if the U.N. got the Ambassador Stevens treatment.
All this reminds me about a parody project I need to get to: “Backin’ the U.S.S.R.”

    Wait, isn’t Samantha Power the same “genius” who is largely responsible for the “strategy” Obama employed in Libya?

    Oh yes, that was she and the U.N. “Responsibility to Protect”. I never heard it mentioned once it served it’s purpose. Guess no one is interested in protecting the people of Crimea or their democratic freedom. We sure pay some big bucks for that kind of hypocrisy, stupidity, corruption. Can hardly wait for them to “Protect” the internet, eh?

    This administration is this administration, and nothing has changed. They stir up shi…..dition in yet another sovereign nation with no concern for who is harmed, then arm and aid the terrorists (freedom fighters) to overthrow the government, freeze all their assets and move on to the next target. So far, the only hiccup in that pattern has been……the Bear. Ask the Egyptians how that worked out for them.

    It’s even worse than your title suggests. The UN isn’t just without positive value, it imposes heavy costs on taxpayers to host it (beyond our disproportionate share of the dues). The misuse of valuable property in Manhattan costs millions a year to the economy and a large amount of potential property and income taxes that would be collected from “best use” that instead must be made up by others is a huge loss. And the time and manpower and facilities devoted to dealing with UN delegations’ parking violations alone cost NYC taxpayers a bundle.

    We haven’t even begun the arduous task of tallying the costs of all the bad policies, since they might also be enacted in Brussels or Mombasa.

    Putin is doing what strongmen do. But he’s especially visible, and his affronts are right in your face. I personally thank him for the favor of exposing Obama as an empty chair. The youngins are getting an education now.
    Oh, and I love the schadenfreude: liberals Soooo love to think they’re worldly; decrying the “ugly American” and “Bush the cowboy.” Their messiah is making us all into a laughingstock, and I’m sure that just burns them up.
