Russell Brand Is the Patriarchy or Something, Says Katy Perry

Celebrity news or Women’s Studies lesson?
Katy Perry has said she thinks ex-husband Russell Brand wanted to have kids as “a way of control”.
The Roar singer, who reportedly recently split from fiance John Mayer, told Elle magazine that while the comedian wanted children, she wasn’t ready to make those sacrifices yet.
She explained: “When I decide to have a family, I’ll just want to be Mom for a little bit… [Brand] really wanted me to have children, and I knew I wasn’t ready — I think it was a way of control.
“I think it was part of thinking, if I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice. I’d have to be at home more. I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn’t ready for it. It wasn’t like, “Hey, let’s have a kid because we’re in love.'”
Russell was said to have ended their 14-month marriage via text on New Year’s Eve in 2011.
So, she’s 29 years old now. Russell Brand dumped her. Her rebound romance with John Mayer is over. If she “wasn’t ready” for motherhood circa 2011, when does Katy Perry suppose she’ll be ready? Does she have any prospective sperm donors lined up?
Katy’s fear and loathing of motherhood — it requires “sacrifice” and is “a way of control” — indicates either a selfish disposition or an emerging feminist consciousness. She’s a victim of the oppressive heteronormative patriarchy. “PIV is always rape, OK?”

“when does Katy Perry suppose she’ll be ready?”
When she’s 50 and is ready to pay millions of dollars to a legion of fertility doctors. And if that doesn’t work, she can just pay a few bucks to an third world baby dealer.

Who?

Hey, Katy, here’s A CRAZY thought: Maybe you should have discussed children with your future husband before you married him.
I know, I know, STOP THE INSANITY!

I have absolutely no problem with a woman who doesn’t want to become a mother not getting pregnant.
Besides, I like this video:
I guess that his Wombatness will have to edit this to embed it. #PromoteWOMBAT!

I think you’re swinging out of the strike zone a little bit on this one. Sounds to me like she wants to be a mom, but not right now — and that Brand wanted to have a child for the wrong reasons. Sorry it led to divorce, but I think that calling this evidence of “an emerging feminist consciousness” is more than a bit of a stretch. She’s a pop singer — that’s all.
Keep posting pictures of her, tho. 😉

I can’t see her refusal to have a child with Russell Brand as anything other than damned good judgment.

Katy Perry gave up every bit of her soul for fame and when Russell Brand asked for a bit of it to start a family, she had none to give.
I hope she never has kids. She is much to selfish, self centered, and immature to be a good parent. I think Brand realized that and it was the last straw.
When her average looks fade and her, well, above average body, starts to sag, she will wonder why no one cares about her anymore.
Garbage in garbage out.

Let’s see, she was 25 or 26 when she married Brand, right? Is 26 “too young” to be a mother? Not at all, The average age of mothers at first birth in the United States is 25.6 years. About 83% of U.S. births are to women 18-34; women in their 20s account for 51.9% of all U.S. births.
So the idea that it was unusual for Russell to think Katy would have a baby in her mid-20s is idiotic — having a baby in your mid-20s is NORMAL, in both a biological and statistical sense.
Now? Katy’s only eight months away from her 30th birthday, so if she ever does have a child, she will be part of that minority of women (45.6%) who give birth in their 30s. If she wants until she’s 35 … well, good luck. Only 14.6% of all U.S. births are to women 35 and older.

All that matters is that she wasn’t ready. There’s no other explanation needed. She was in the prime of her career, it’s not hard to see why she wouldn’t want to give it up to be mommy.

I rise only to note that no one is ever really ready to have kids, a realization which strikes you the moment you see the first one for the first time.
February 27th, 2014 @ 5:06 pm
Well, perhaps so. But even if she wants to drift outside of the statistical norm a bit (career, maybe?), that doesn’t mean that she has “an emerging feminist consciousness” or thinks she’s a victim of the patriarchy. Nor did anything she said (Brand may well be a control freak jerk). That’s were you were stretching, IMO.
P.S. There are statistics and there are people. My own two offspring are members of the 14.6%, for example.

I was thinking much the same. The biggest lapse in judgement I see against her is she married that psycho in the first place.

I only know one thing about Katy Perry–she has horrible taste in men. She seems drawn to men who, whether true or not, look like they just emerged from a week-long bender in the men’s room of an urban bus station. Russell Brand and John Mayer both look like they have been recently oiled, and I can only imagine that they smell of a mix of sweat, smoke, bodily fluids and industrial floor cleanser.
She is a stuck-up moron, but not having Russell Brand’s spawn may have been the wisest choice.

C’mon now! Show some sensitivity.

Is that you Boris?

He was running security for Fearless Leader Putin in Sochi.

This is what happens when you stick a microphone into the face of an overproduced, arrogant, untalented load of hype and expect it to render intelligent opinions.
February 27th, 2014 @ 10:41 pm
She’s not attractive.
February 27th, 2014 @ 11:06 pm
That’s certainly debatable.

What does Barack Obama have to do with this story?

Well said.

Have you ever seen her without makeup?…

… that doesn’t mean that she has “an emerging feminist consciousness”
Are you serious? Have you actually listened to the lyrics to ‘Roar’? The song is the worst tripe, and is straight out of the RadFem playbook. Or maybe you’d like to go back a few years and listen to ‘I kissed a girl’?
Maybe Perry is positioning herself for the inevitable “coming out” announcement…just about the time her popularity wanes.
Perry has always had two talents, and one of them is self-promotion. I agree that she sold her soul a long time ago. She is an empty, hot husk.
February 28th, 2014 @ 2:53 am
OMG! She’s really Lena Dunham!
February 28th, 2014 @ 4:59 am
It’s total self-absorption.
It always is.
February 28th, 2014 @ 7:13 am
She’s her skinny sister.
February 28th, 2014 @ 7:22 am
She’s going to end up a lonely old woman.
February 28th, 2014 @ 7:31 am
She’s a big Obama booster
February 28th, 2014 @ 7:58 am
Who’s not attractive.

Why do women hate their boobs?
I think that is what it all boils down to.
February 28th, 2014 @ 8:24 am
You’re probably right — I watch Katy Perry videos with the sound off.
P.S. I’m fanatic about the gov’t not censoring expression, but I could make an exception for a ban on Auto-tune.
February 28th, 2014 @ 9:04 am
Not amazingly attractive, but she doesn’t have narrow eyes. There are definately far worse women out there.
February 28th, 2014 @ 10:28 am
Ready to be a mom, not ready…she can decide for herself. (Though it might affect what men are willing to be with her.) But this is the crazy bit:
“I think it was a way of control.”
Or, or, maybe two people in a relationship might want different things. Maybe Russell was just ready for kids! It takes two to make that happen. Maybe not everything is about subjecting women. Maybe.
We can have discussions about why the burden tends to fall greater on the woman. (And individuals can always choose to buck the trend in their own cases.) Or we can blame. But not both.
