Unemployed Magazine Executives
Posted on | February 5, 2014 | 36 Comments
Time, Inc. — which publishes Time, Fortune, People, Sports Illustrated and In Style magazines — is laying off hundreds of employees, and the hit list includes executives in the company:
Gone in the cutbacks are David Geithner, an executive vice president who was in charge of the style and entertainment group that included No. 1 moneymaker People and top monthly In Style. Geithner is the brother of former Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.
Good news: He’ll qualify for ObamaCare.

He may qualify, but qualification does not guarantee seeing a doctor.
Read that in the voice of the side effect warning for drug commercials.
But then TURBO TAX TIMMY will be sure to let him sponge for a while.

It’s possible there’s never been a more IMPORTANT time to be a journalist but never a WORSE time to work in the journalism industry as currently managed.
February 5th, 2014 @ 9:39 am
Meanwhile a new paid writer’s first piece starts today on my site and one or two more are expected come March.
I can’t imagine what our sites would look like if we had Tina Brown class money backing us.

Free cannolis in the lunch room? Heck, you could even have a dedicated lunch room!
February 5th, 2014 @ 9:55 am
That sounds about right.
February 5th, 2014 @ 11:39 am
They are not unemployed. They have successfully made the transition to becoming “free agents”.
February 5th, 2014 @ 2:02 pm
Being a Genuine Professional Journalist must be a lot like being the only person who understands lift and drag in a world of people desperately flapping their arms trying to stay up in the air.
February 5th, 2014 @ 2:03 pm
Glad to see these liberal cheerleaders taking it in the nads.
February 5th, 2014 @ 2:04 pm
I keep writing that people on the political right need to begin the sad duty of letting the old media go.
If you’re Matt Bevin, for example, and your campaign office gets a call from the New York Times or WaPo, the only rational response would be to laugh and hang up.

I think there is a place for traditional print journalism, but it’s not covering the things which have heretofore been the mainstay of daily papers. Rather, it is small, high quality, weekly local papers which focus on a discrete area and eschew national and international news for local human interest, high school sports, opinions on local issues and the like. We have one where I live and its going gangbusters. Simple reason: people would rather see their own names in print than read another take on a national story they’ve read about 10 times online.
February 5th, 2014 @ 2:52 pm
The problem is the medium itself; it might be fancier these days, but it’s still 18th century technology.
There’s nothing a newspaper can do — other than help paper-train a puppy — that can’t be done not only as well, but even better, by an electronic reader of some form, because the internet versions of the news are continually updated.
I can’t recall where I saw it, but I remember a statistic which said it would be cheaper for The New York Times to provide every subscriber with a Kindle than to get them the print edition every day.
February 5th, 2014 @ 2:54 pm
This isn’t going to stop the swimsuit edition, is it?
February 5th, 2014 @ 3:32 pm
nice analogy!
February 5th, 2014 @ 3:36 pm
I find this piece news thoroughly amusing and enjoyable!
“the most profitable magazine in the stable, People,”
Who could have guessed that in today’s America? 😉
dumb and dumber all the way…
February 5th, 2014 @ 4:43 pm
Every building on any campus that houses a “School of Journalism” needs a visit from an ill-tempered monkey packing a backpack full of dynamite.
February 5th, 2014 @ 4:58 pm
It’s simply supply and demand economics. Had to thin the herd, because how many cheerleaders does one team need? Put another way : how many reporters can fasten their lips on Obama’s ass at one time anyway?
February 5th, 2014 @ 5:02 pm
The tragic part is that even as young people realize it is NOT a good time to go into journalism to make a living, the overpaid tenured faculty at the J-schools won’t be being laid off. They will remain fat, happy, and dispensing their patented leftist world view that destroyed traditional journalism in the first place.
February 5th, 2014 @ 5:11 pm
They’re not unemployed, they’re choosing to enjoy the benefits of Obamacare at leisure.
February 5th, 2014 @ 7:08 pm
That’s racist. I denounce you.
February 5th, 2014 @ 7:10 pm
We’re coming to that. All it takes is getting the GOPe off our necks and the sensible (read real) right can start ignoring them.
February 5th, 2014 @ 8:27 pm
“Vice President of the Style and Entertainment Group…”
That sounds like a job that the owner would create for his only sister’s son.(or a layoff waiting to happen)
February 5th, 2014 @ 8:33 pm
“There’s nothing a newspaper can do — other than help paper-train a puppy…”
and line a parrot cage.(it’s why I keep my subscription going)
February 5th, 2014 @ 8:35 pm
Not that many but if you count his wi……ah, never mind
February 5th, 2014 @ 10:31 pm
I think they should be merged into one department, along with the wymens studies profs.
Purely as a cost-saving measure.
You’d only have to search one building to find the loonies with the fake, race-baiting nooses and other self-vandalism. Then you use that as a reason to give them more vandal-proof offices, with heavy, ceramic-based-paint covered, nonstick walls. And some nice, environmentally-friendly high-power LED white lighting.
And then some special padding on the walls, to protect them from the ultra-violent rightwingers hiding everywhere.
Naturally you’d want them to wear special jackets that don’t tear easily, and which protect them from their own arms and hands when defending themselves, flailing-style (which is vital in a gun-free zone). Say, something in a wraparound, self-hugging model. Natural, of course. No harmful dyes.
And orderlies.
That would about do it.
February 5th, 2014 @ 10:34 pm
Thanks! I’m good for one, nice analogy per year.
Damn, it’s early February.
February 5th, 2014 @ 11:45 pm
Journalism? All they do is embellish what has come in on the Obama fax machine.
February 6th, 2014 @ 1:08 am
Today in my local paper I read of a woman in a unincorporated area about 20 miles away who was arrested for criminal attempt to solicit.. and Medicaid fraud.
Not something you’ll find in a big paper all talking up the latest approved talking points.
(I really, really have no idea how you manage to combine those two crimes in such a way that it comes to the attention of the Police.)
February 6th, 2014 @ 1:08 am
Follow your dreams! They’re living proof! Beefcake! BEEFCAKE!
February 6th, 2014 @ 5:03 am
😀 !!
(I always need to rack my brain to come up with good analogies myself! It’s so nice when I can even come close)
February 6th, 2014 @ 5:16 am
The thought just came to me that Time, Inc. should launch a new magazine, a sister to their flagship and best-seller People! magazine, which would cover all their newly unemployed self-entitled journos. Now what to call it?
Ex-People! (at Time, Inc.)
The No Longer Employed People! magazine
Fluffy Unemployed Journos and Other Liberal People!
Full of big, colorful photos of the all the Time Inc idiots lounging about not doing much more than they used to when at Time, Inc. Hey, I’d buy it…
February 6th, 2014 @ 6:47 am
You don’t need to do that; that’s why God invented junk mail.
February 6th, 2014 @ 6:52 am
And while we might laugh at the unemployment of so many of those writers and executives who voted for Barack Hussein Obama, this paragraph is important:
That means the printers, that means the office people who had nothing to do with editorial content, and they were all with magazines which had virtually nothing to do with any political publications.
February 6th, 2014 @ 3:22 pm
There are those who would claim that you believe in a falsefalse Christian based junk mail dogma.
Those same people would tell you that it’s a proven fact that junk mail is evolutionary and that Darwin established this when he found land crabs etching coconuts with a Publishers Clearing House winners certificate .
And they say that WE are the crazy one’s.
February 6th, 2014 @ 8:06 pm
‘Fax machine’?…what’s that, old man?
February 6th, 2014 @ 8:09 pm
You left out the multicultural studies people!
