Hoffman Planned Heroin Binge?
Posted on | February 3, 2014 | 33 Comments
After Sunday’s deliberately unsympathetic notice of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death — millionaire celebrity junkies don’t qualify for my pity — I hadn’t expected to return to the topic.
Once a junkie’s dead, that’s it. Corpses don’t make much news.
However, Donald Douglas reports that police found 50 bags of heroin at Hoffman’s apartment, indicating he planned a long binge.
Possession of 50 bags of heroin? That’s a felony, last time I checked.
The wealthy felon’s final binge proved to be unexpectedly short.
End of story.

I like to stock up at Costco sometimes…but it is generally not heroin.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 9:34 pm
He left three kids fatherless. I feel especially bad for them.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 9:37 pm
Junkies die or go to jail every day and nobody notices or cares. Oh, but this junkie was a rich famous white guy, and suddenly it’s a tragedy.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 9:39 pm
Exactly. A horrible legacy he left.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 9:50 pm
It is a tragedy for all kids impacted by their parents self destructive lifestyles.
It is pathetic for junkies who die. I thought he was a talented actor. But if you don’t realize by 46 that heroin is a bad idea…well there is no helping you.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 9:53 pm
Deed done.
Price paid
’nuff said
February 3rd, 2014 @ 10:11 pm
Maybe the 46 bags were a sample? I love Costco samples.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 10:14 pm
“That’s a felony, last time I checked.”
With Holder at the helm you probably should check again 😉
February 3rd, 2014 @ 10:38 pm
Why does a person like that need to drift off into bliss? He was insufficiently grateful.
February 3rd, 2014 @ 10:57 pm
Reckon those kids had been fatherless for some time already…
February 3rd, 2014 @ 10:59 pm
Was he acting or was it the drugs?
February 3rd, 2014 @ 11:23 pm
Well, whatever. Just don’t think this damages the credibility of Hollywood activists or anything. Everyone knows they can all be zorched totally out of their minds and still be important spokesmen and women for the Great Issues of Our Time.
February 4th, 2014 @ 12:52 am
When I hit the same sample more than 3 or 4 times in a row, I start getting dirty looks.
February 4th, 2014 @ 12:53 am
Well in the end he was method acting. A little too much preparation…
February 4th, 2014 @ 12:54 am
There is no fixing it now.
February 4th, 2014 @ 12:59 am
He was sober-drug free (supposedly) for 23 years, and then went off the wagon and went quickly to shooting up heroin. And now he is dead.
February 4th, 2014 @ 1:08 am
It’s probably the same if you hit the weed brownies like… oh I see what you are doing, I’m calling entrapment.
February 4th, 2014 @ 1:21 am
“50 bags of heroin… indicating that he planned a long binge.”
Or indicating that he was a supplier for other losers in Hollywood.
February 4th, 2014 @ 1:23 am
People always complain when celebrities pick up their awards and thank God.
Take a look at Hoffman and now you can see what happens when a celebrity thanks himself.
February 4th, 2014 @ 2:11 am
2.5 million or so people die in the US every year and nobody notices most of them except for family and friends of the deceased. We notice the deaths of the famous – even if they aren’t rich or white or male – because they are famous, not because they are any more virtuous.
Is there some deeper reason you feel compelled to piss on this particular corpse with two scornful posts? Did I miss the dance over Whitney Houston?
February 4th, 2014 @ 2:50 am
The scorn is less about the fate of PSH than the pretense that this is just some horrible accident with no moral culpability component.
And Whitney and Phillip shared the same problem.
February 4th, 2014 @ 5:29 am
And yet you still lionize Hunter S. Thompson.
From Wikipedia (check their refs):
Thompson was also an ardent supporter of drug legalization and became known for his detailed accounts of his own drug use. He was an early supporter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws and served on the group’s advisory board for over 30 years, until his death. [68]
He told an interviewer in 1997 that drugs should be legalized “[a]cross the board. It might be a little rough on some people for a while, but I think it’s the only way to deal with drugs. Look at Prohibition: all it did was make a lot of criminals rich.”[37]
So what is it Stacy? Seems like you tend to have your feet firmly planted in mid-air, on this issue at least…
February 4th, 2014 @ 5:52 am
You can admire one aspect of a man’s life without admiring it all.
February 4th, 2014 @ 5:54 am
You walked into it.
February 4th, 2014 @ 6:33 am
Hey, have I badmouthed Philip Seymour Hoffman as an actor? No, I have not. I simply refuse to join in the posture of reverence for the victim that has typified much liberal coverage of Hoffman’s death. Celebrity millionaires who OD on heroin are not victims.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was a great actor and Hunter S. Thompson was a brilliant journalist. These are both facts. Thompson’s politics — he was a man of the Left his entire life — does not change the fact of his brilliance..In fact, Thompson’s left-wing views informed his criticism of media bias in his day. To a great extent, Hell’s Angels was an attempt to get past the ignorant and sensational media coverage of the biker phenomenon and understand the reality. And Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72 shows how the bland assumptions of the media establishment — the Conventional Wisdom — were destroyed by McGovern’s insurgent candidacy.
It is sad that many of Thompson’s would-be imitators think that using drugs and striking left-wing poses were the essence of his journalism, and neither should his critics mistake the image for the substance.
February 4th, 2014 @ 8:27 am
Supposedly, he had been sober for 23 years. Then he buys 50 bags of horse?
I assume he had been previously addicted to heroin, but the article didn’t say. Heroin is a hellishly addictive drug, and boy will it kill you.
February 4th, 2014 @ 11:30 am
He lived in New York, and divided his time between film and theatre.
February 4th, 2014 @ 11:31 am
He has had at least one tour through rehab in recent years (in 2006, I think).
February 4th, 2014 @ 1:25 pm
“Hollywood” is also the name of an industry. Woody Allen is part of “Hollywood” even though he hasn’t set foot in the town in years.

[…] Hoffman Planned Heroin Binge? […]
February 4th, 2014 @ 5:27 pm
Bingo
Let’s see who has a meltdown or disappears for a while.
February 4th, 2014 @ 5:28 pm
I wonder how many young folks who admire Hoffman will now shoot up and die? How many young folks who believe that an actor/actress must have personal demons in order to rise to acme of skill that Hoffman had?
February 11th, 2014 @ 12:04 pm
