Young stars circa 1987: Corey Haim (left) and Corey Feldman

Apropos of recent controversies, Pete Da Tech Guy quotes a 2011 interview with former child actor Corey Feldman:

“I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia. That’s the biggest problem for children in this industry. … It’s the big secret,” Feldman said. . . .
“I was surrounded by [pedophiles] when I was 14 years old. . . . Didn’t even know it. It wasn’t until I was old enough to realize what they were and what they wanted . . . till I went, Oh, my God. They were everywhere,” Feldman, 40, said.

In that interview, Feldman was talking about his former Lost Boys co-star: “There’s one person to blame in the death of Corey Haim. And that person happens to be a Hollywood mogul. And that person needs to be exposed, but, unfortunately, I can’t be the one to do it.” I reacted to Pete’s post with my habitual sarcasm:

But then I realized: Corey Haim can be reached for comment, via the “Corey Haim’s Notes on the Afterlife” series at Protein Wisdom. The dearly departed even offered his perspective on “Free Kate”:

I don’t usually weigh in on terrestrial politics, but the truth is, if  I’d been arrested every time I got a hand job from some underage kid who wanted me to sign his Lost Boys t-shirt, there would be no Dream a Little Dream, much less its (in my opinion) criminally underrated sequel.
Sometimes the law is just stupid — especially when it threatens to get in the way of art. . . .
American society really needs to get over its sexual hangups.

Please excuse “Corey’s” attitude. Sometimes dark sarcasm is the only sane alternative to screaming rage. As to this oft-heard argument — that “hangups” about sex are our real problem — it was in a 1999 interview that A Return to Modesty author Wendy Shalit offered the best rejoinder: “I don’t have hangups. You’re just a pervert.”

And we wonder why these young stars and starlets are so screwed up. Part of it is the probable sexual abuse and the other part is being introduced to drugs and alcohol and the enabling that goes on by their handlers/agents.

That could be why there are so many former child star suicides.

Sexual exploitation of the young? This is part of the everything goes mindset, it morphs into this.

And persons attracted to youth sexually tend to go where the youth are located.

Combine that with the money and privilege of Hollywood and…well things can go badly.

He says he is going to name names. He should do so. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2083484/Dancing-On-Ice-2012-Corey-Feldman-reveal-names-TWO-Hollywood-paedophiles-abused-him.html

And also the starlet meltdowns, most recently the Amanda Bynes episode. Of course there could be many factors involved, but you can’t help but suspect that perhaps their adolescence wasn’t spent in the most wholesome environments. Even if you rule out sexual abuse, the fact is that crude language and rude attitudes are commonplace in show-biz, and it’s easy to imagine kids being corrupted (or jaded) by exposure to such a mentality.

You may have noticed that Alyssa Milano was one of the people who tried to have an “intervention” with Amanda Bynes. And you have to figure that Alyssa knows all about the perils and pitfalls.

Oh: Dana Plato — that’s a biography you want to scrutinize in terms of ex-child star suicides.

http://www.nj.com/morris/index.ssf/2013/06/morris_county_teacher_accused.html Obviously it is not just Hollywood…

And of course there could be many factors on why child stars often have bad outcomes.. I suspect the biggest being parents being involved–I am going to guess those child stars who managed to turn out okay had at least one good parent looking out for them. And obviously the nature of the show you are working on matters (Lost Boys vs. Little House on the Prairie).

Child molestation is certainly happening in Hollywood. And while it is fine to go after the Catholic Church or the Boy Scouts, the Hollywood elite have managed to brush off any serious inquiry. But stories on Hollywood corruption have always sold and they may find out this story will have legs.

Actually, if you read the autobiography of Allison Arngrim, even though the Little House set was OK because of Michael Landon, some of the kids were already screwed up and came from horribly dysfunctional families. Arngrim’s brother, a child star, sexually abused and beat her for years.

Clayton Cramer:” There are simply too many surveys that show
homosexuals and bisexuals as disproportionately CSA [child sexual abuse] victims to consider
this a coincidence. The overlap between the symptoms of CSA (substance
abuse, sexual confusion, suicide, emotional immaturity, obesity,
hypersexuality, or asexuality) and behaviors that
are very common in the gay community should be causing some serious
questions to be asked. Yet “I was born this way” has now become dogma.
The progressive movement has made this into a cause — and the facts do
    not much matter anymore.” http://www.americanthinker.com/2013/06/i_was_born_this_way.html#ixzz2Vjn7iz5b

I did not know that, but it doesn’t surprise me.

As I noted, the first line of defense is the parent. But if have a mom a step removed from Gypsy Rose Lee’s, well then you are defenseless. Most parents do not push their kids into show business. Those who do tend to be the ones least capable of protecting those kids.

The first step in the GLBT Long March was to have 2 psychiatrists who are gay re-write the DSM so that homosexuality is a congenital feature, not an aberration. The biggest success story of the GLBT Long March has been the complete suppression of every fact that contradicts the “Born This Way” theme.

I did follow up on that. I could make a joke this explains why she was so good as Nelly, but it is not funny what she went through. She was abused by her biological brother (which is of course pretty horrible). That said, it was not LHP (at least not directly), but her home life which was to blame. He was the brat on Land of the Giants.

To her credit, she seems to be getting through it okay.
