No School Like the Old School

Ed Driscoll has memory. Intelligence is, in fact, mostly about memory. So the more you remember, the smarter you are. This is why old people are smart and young people are stupid.

So I was reading Ed’s account of “The State of Journalism in 2013,” and I was stunned when Ed reminded readers — I knew, but had forgotten — that Mark Steyn used to write for The Atlantic.

For now, The Atlantic occupies the same spot in my head as Vanity Fair: there’s often enough good stuff in the issue to make up for [consistently irritating feature and/or writer], so I haven’t canceled. (Three guesses who/what irks me about V.F.)

Ed wonders if Steyn will be doing obits elsewhere.

Steyn has been working on a three volume set as the obit for The American Moment. (America Alone and After America represent the first two volumes.

I cannot imagine ordering a subscription to either The Atlantic or VF, but when I see a copy lying around a doctor’s office I will leaf through it. At least the New Yorker has a few decent cartoons and usually one article worth reading each magazine.

CGH: That they still have that gelatinous slime mold James Wolcott growing in its basement?

He’s done them occasionally on his own site since leaving The Atlantic in 2007.
