Last Friday, Pope Benedict gave a Christmas address, in which he raised serious issues about the role of marriage in society:

So it became clear that the question of the family is not just about a particular social construct, but about man himself — about what he is and what it takes to be authentically human. The challenges involved are manifold. First of all there is the question of the human capacity to make a commitment or to avoid commitment. Can one bind oneself for a lifetime? Does this correspond to man’s nature? Does it not contradict his freedom and the scope of his self-realization? Does man become himself by living for himself alone and only entering into relationships with others when he can break them off again at any time? Is lifelong commitment antithetical to freedom? Is commitment also worth suffering for? Man’s refusal to make any commitment — which is becoming increasingly widespread as a result of a false understanding of freedom and self-realization as well as the desire to escape suffering — means that man remains closed in on himself and keeps his “I” ultimately for himself, without really rising above it. Yet only in self-giving does man find himself, and only by opening himself to the other, to others, to children, to the family, only by letting himself be changed through suffering, does he discover the breadth of his humanity. When such commitment is repudiated, the key figures of human existence likewise vanish: father, mother, child — essential elements of the experience of being human are lost. . . .

Does anyone in the media ever attempt to read and understand the speeches of  Pope Benedict? The New York Daily News account of his December 21 speech to the curia (the “Vatican  bureaucracy”) is being mangled by the Daily Kos into “Pope gives special holiday hate speech against gays  because it’s Christmas.” The Mediaite  headline (off London’s Daily Mail) is “Merry Christmas? Pope Benedict XVI Denounces Gay Marriage As  A ‘Manipulation Of Nature’.”

How is it possible to discuss anything seriously with such fanatics?

    Catholic hatred is not only popular among the American Left, it’s popular enough among American Catholics. Obama won the Catholic vote AGAIN despite forcing rules to deprive Catholic institutions of their religious freedom.

    I’m glad they love Obama more than Jesus. They can spend eternity in hell with him, and good riddance to them all.

    Many people who profess to be Catholic and or Christian are in fact anti-Christs and anti-Christians. Obama and Pelosi spring to mind as prime examples.

    “Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose…..”.
    The message is important because it speaks to mans (the individuals) unwillingness to make any committment, even to himself. To espouse values, convictions, ….without the will to defend them unless it’s convenient or easy to do weakens or completely diminishes them. And that’s the hell of our own making we are living in these days. Committment to others, our country, our God, hell, even our daily exercise routine, takes self discipline and often self denial and our own discomfort, It requires us to humble ourselves a bit, to look outside our own wants and needs with a wish to serve others, to do the right thing simply because it is. Those who would subvert our culture are the same selfish liars and propagandists who ridicule loyalty, fidelity, patriotism, honor, forthrightness, steadfastness……we have long needed to silence their voices and expose them for the destructive influences they are. Then take responsibility for our actions, for our failures and start making those committments….but most of all learning to keep them.

    Anyone can call themselves Catholic, even those whose sole purpose is to destroy Christ’s Church. Satan (and by extension, all his willing tools) is the father of lies.

    Most successful people have made sacrifices to get where they are today – spending time and energy to achieve. The entire history of civilization is one of humans giving up in the present to have much more later. Building skyscrapers, treating cancers, or making a car are tough tasks, but well worth it in the end.

    How demented do you have to be to not understand that the same applies to one’s emotional life?

    I met an older Catholic gentleman who said he thought God might be more forgiving of a Barack Obama given the upbringing he had…but noted the same could not be said for Nancy Pelosi. She will have a lot to answer for.

    William F. Buckley once termed anti-Catholicism “The Intellectual’s anti-Semitism” He’d likely be surprised to find today that the intellectual’s anti-Semitism is… anti-Semitism. But it is nonetheless refreshing to see that today’s Progressive Left retains the flexibility to mock all faith, with the notable exception of Islam.

    Speaking of commitment, I maintain that it’s got to be a whole lot harder to stay married to someone of the opposite sex.

    If you can’t stand the opposite-sex (heat), stay out of the marriage (kitchen).

    Two men or two women who want to play house are not going to have to work as hard to make it work for years and years and years. To protect women and children (and the men who start out life as… children), we’ve got to continue to privilege opposite-sex marriage. Fertile, faithful, forever.
