That pretty much sums it up, but from time to time I like to provide more specific examples — from the monthly sales report — of how this works: A reader bought a $179 Kindle, and I got a $12.53 commission. Another reader bought Adobe Premiere video-editing software for $84.99, and I got a $6.30 commission.

 

 

For more than a year, I’ve been trying to get some reader to buy a $20,000 diamond ring via Amazon, because if I could just sell one . . .

    The downside, unfortunately, being that they’re probably someone in the northeast who’s in their third week of having no electricity due to Sandy. Thanks, FEMA and JCP&L.

    (I had to travel 2 hours one way to buy my generator at Sears; by the time I got home the power had been restored, but damned if I’m going to be put in that position again.)

    When I buy from Amazon, I always buy through you. Just bought about $150 bucks worth of stuff, so you should see about $10 or so coming your way soon.

    Remember to run the generator on a regular basis, including putting a load on it, like a space heater, to make sure it works. Just sitting there, unused, is a bad thing. I’ve seen big generators go ka-blooie under similar circumstances.

    Also……pick up some fuel additives, say, Star Tron. That damned ethanol in gasoline is bad for generators. And maybe a fuel stabilizer (like Sta Bil) so that any stored fuel doesn’t de-stabilize (gasoline has a definite shelf life, Hollywood apocalyptic movies to the contrary).

    For the same reason, run the generator dry. It makes starting the engine a pain, but better than having varnish in the fuel lines.

    Better than a portable generator is a whole house generator which runs off of natural gas (or propane). Originally we had a portable but we hated having to buy and store gasoline. My son had a hard time finding gasoline when they lost power for 6 days during Sandy.

    Agreed. But that takes a whole another level of planning and investment. I have a tri-fuel generator myself, just no way to get natural gas or propane to it.

    Couldn’t you at least hook up a propane tank for a gas grill to it? I’m looking for one of those because storing half a dozen propane tanks in the garage would be a lot safer than half a dozen 5 gallon cans of gasoline.

    Most tri-fuel generators require a minimum pressure to operate properly. Mine takes at least a 100 pound LPG tank. I’ll probably pick up one up, if I can work around the logistics of storing that much LPG safely.
