    I like that, he’s dead on. There’s another aspect to this story that should get more notice, too, and that is that Obama doesn’t have anything to do with these phones. They are a result of an FCC regulation for “lifeline” service that was initiated during the Reagan administration and expanded to wireless phones under the Clinton administration.

    The reimbursement for service to the carriers that provide this service comes from the “universal access fee” that paying customers pay on their bill. At around 2009, advances in phone technology and cellular network technology allowed the cost to service customers to fall greatly. Tracfone realized that they could provide a cheap phone that probably costs then between $5 and $10 to make and a basic service plan that cost less to provide than the reimbursement so they could make money promoting this service. Before that time the reimbursement was not enough and resulted in only discounted and not free service.

    This is a Tracfone program, not an Obama program but it would not surprise me to see OFA volunteers signing people up for it to make it appear as if it was something Obama is doing for them. Romney supporters could do exactly the same thing if they wanted and people could get Romneyphones.

    What the message needs to be directly to her is that Obama had nothing whatsoever to do with that phone.
