On the Romney Video: ‘The Q&A Didn’t Turn Out as Well as He Had Hoped’

Let’s begin by nominating Jimmie Bise Jr. for the Pulitzer Prize for Humorous Understatement. That there’s funny, I don’t care who you are.

Meanwhile, in the Real 1% — the pro-Obama media — the latest furor is over a second clip from the same secret (and possibly illegally recorded) video in which Romney criticizes talk of Mideast peace based on the “two-state solution.” Ed Morrissey explains that Romney is right:

What Romney actually says is that peace isn’t possible because the Palestinians won’t accept a two-state plan as a permanent solution … a point that has been obvious ever since Yasser Arafat walked away from a carefully-crafted deal at the end of the Clinton administration and called for another intifada.  With Hamas now in the mix and their parent group Muslim Brotherhood taking control of Egypt, the Palestinians have even less incentive to accept a permanent state of Israel.

    Conveniently enough, Gallup’s latest poll shows 54% of Americans think government does/tries to do too much, while only 39% think it should be doing more. But among Democrats, 69% believe the government should do more.

    Republicans and independents believe it does too much by wide, overwhelming majorities. This is where the election can and will be fought.

    Romney just observed that Obama’s parasitic base cannot be weaned away. His numbers were off – 47% pay no income tax, but not all those are on welfare programs or committed to staying there. But the people who have fraudulently made it onto disability rolls under Obama – more than have found jobs under this regime – aren’t coming off without a fight, and aren’t voting for anyone who talks about “personal responsibility.”

    Of that 47%, over 60% are workers who, after the standard deduction is applied, pay no taxes. They clock in and out every day and have their paychecks docked W-2 style. Are they moochers? Are they the ones who Mitt Romney thinks need to “take responsibility for their lives?” How do lower taxes for those who do not need them help the 47%?

    The President’s authority extends to all of us, not just to those with whom we agree. This was no gaffe. This is the man in his own words, and I believe him.

    Regrettably for Romney, so will the electoral college.

    Depends on the statement you are attributing to Obama, which seems to be “none.” On the other hand, my comment was directed at a specific claim made by Mitt Romney, one which he will soon find will put the electoral college out of reach if it wasn’t already.

    And it will remain out of reach for the GOP, as constructed. The tent, in 2012, needs to be a wee bit bigger than a bare, shrinking plurality.

    Just went through this with a friend of mine. Not illegal to record in Florida when you’re in a public environment. I get that it was a private fundraiser, but he didn’t have a reasonable expectation of privacy when you’re in a room full of people.
