Because nothing says ‘the Mayor is a soup nazi‘ quite like having the jackwagon decide the size of your drink. Me, I nearly died from White Castle. I guess that edict will come next week.

Update: get you a 16 oz. shot of Ace’s finest.

Update II: So that’s how you do it!

So why did this guy get re-elected? Most of what we hear is how much he’s a nannyist.

This is just one of many stories of Nanny Statism that periodically comes out of NY City such as salt bans or forbidding smoking on the sidewalk. One never seems to hear how New Yorkers react to or deal with these over time. Are all these rules actually obeyed, or are they just ignored?

He’s a billionaire, runs as independent but is in the mainstream of NYC liberal thought, and gives voters a chance to vote against both parties at once without really upsetting the status quo.  This particular power grab makes news, but the City government has been moving in ever-more restrictive directions about commerce and private behavior for a long time, well before Bloomberg even made his first billion.

It makes it hard even to raise money for a challenge – donors don’t believe you can win and don’t want to piss off the Mayor.

As an obnoxious, annoying, arrogant ass as Bloomberg comes across to most of us, in NYC he seems an average upper-class guy.  They’re all obnoxious and annoying, even the nice ones.  Oh, sure, Giuliani  could smile and fire off quips to the press, but as U.S. Attorney he was known to open negotiations with potential targets and witnesses by cutting off their testicles and forcing them to eat them as his starting position.  Then he got nasty.

And there probably isn’t enough serious opposition in the City’s political mindset to overturn the ban.  If City Council and the Mayor feel no heat, why would they retreat?

New York state has seen California and Illinois, and even their Democratic Governor realizes they can’t follow that road.  The City just puts the pedal to the metal.

Most of Bloomy’s edicts are annoying but you have to remember are tailored for cheap virtue and publicity chatter, but with minimum impact to actual voters.  Who drinks sugary drinks over 16 oz?  What are you a giant friggin hummingbird?  Now I do not think such drinks should be banned, but I cannot imagine buying one.

And of course, so what is stopping me for buying a 64 oz soda at the store and drinking that?

The rules for businesses are strictly enforced.  Nanny State 101:  be the biggest bully to the biggest kid, and everyone else will fall in line.

Not sure about the sidewalks, it probably depends on the location.

“Kung Food” is ROFLMAO stuff.  Not only simply clever punning, but evokes a subtle image of a movie sequence where Bruce Lee faces the Evil Overlord (played by Bloomberg) and does his thing.

I thought my own contribution of “Nanny McFee” summed him up!

Christine Quinn, to me, is even scarier than Nanny Bloomberg.

This is the reason I rarely take part in these things on Twitter: Smitty is such a master.

Under Mayor Bloomberg, NYers can’t buy a soft drink over 16 ozs but never fear: you can still get a 40 oz Budweiser for the commute home…
