Students Walk Out After Anti-Bullying Speaker Dan Savage Calls Bible ‘Bulls–t’

Two weeks ago, the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association sponsored a national conference for high school journalists in Seattle. They invited San Francisco-based sex-advice columnist Dan Savage as a speaker. Savage reportedly began his speech by announcing to the teenagers, “I hope you’re all using birth control,” and made lascivious comments about his “husband.”
More than 100 students reportedly walked out of the event after Savage, who founded the “It Gets Better” project — widely praised as part of the “anti-bullying” movement — used obscene language in attacking religious beliefs against homosexuality:
“People often point out that… they can’t help with the anti-gay bullying because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans, that being gay is wrong,” Savage tells the crowd in a short video posted on Tumblr by a student attendee.
“We can learn to ignore the [expletive] in the Bible about gay people the same way we have learned to ignore the [expletive] in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation,” Savage said.
At this point, student Jenny Patterson yelled “That’s bull,” and walked out. As other students followed, Savage called them “pansies,” she said.
Patterson said she had put up with Savage’s cussing and “references to how good his husband looks in a Speedo and how he has to pry him off.” But his attacks on Catholics, Mormons, and Christians for their stance on homosexuality went too far.
“I didn’t come to hear someone preach to me about how wrong my beliefs are,” said Patterson, 17 . . . “I don’t know what the agenda was behind [Savage’s] session, but it was unnecessary.”
Here’s the video and notice how many of the students cheered and applauded when Savage called the Bible “bulls–t”:
Savage calls the Bible a “radical pro-slavery document,” thinking that this certainly makes him morally superior for his anti-Christian bigotry, but notice the student walking out at the 2:44 mark.
Ironically, Lisa Graas credits Savage with awarding “crown jewels.” Among other issues raised by this disturbing report:
- Isn’t it time to admit that the “anti-bullying” movement is just another way to get gay-rights activism into public schools?
- Can we also now admit that, insofar as the public education system is pro-gay, it must also be anti-Christian?
- Why aren’t you home-schooling yet?
More from Karla Dial at Citizen Link and Todd Starnes at Fox News. Now a Memeorandum thread with commentary by Jawa Report and the Washington Examiner. Dan Savage and his “husband” were guests at last year’s “Gay Pride” Month reception at the White House, and Savage wore an “Evolve Already” button to the the event:
“I believe the president should evolve,” Savage told pool reporter Julie Mason from Politico at the reception to honor LGBT Pride Month. . . . “He says he’s evolving, I believe him.” Savage added, “I want to hurry him along.”
Since President Obama has invited Savage to the White House, perhaps someone should ask whether the president approves of Savage’s speech to the high school journalists. We know we’ll get an honest answer from Jay “I Never Lie” Carney.
BTW, Dan Savage: I stopped eating shellfish more than 20 years ago when I married a Seventh-Day Adventist. Don’t miss it at all.
Happy Sabbath!
UPDATE: Linked at Protein Wisdom, One Red Thread, Daley Gator and The Lonely Conservative — thanks! And also thanks to Bill Quick at Daily Pundit for resisting the urge to write a “searingly corrosive screed about religious bigotry, ignorance, hatred, and the thug life of homophobic high school fag beaters.” Jazz Shaw at Hot Air writes:
So you picked a raunchy sex advice columnist who publishes a column called “Savage Love” as your ambassador to help out at risk children. What could possibly go wrong?
More from the “Did You Know?” files: I played trombone in high school band and was a drama major in college. Obviously, I know nothing about “bullying” and am insensitive toward gays.
Perhaps schools should pay me to teach Advanced Bullying Survival Methods, such as: Drop out of the “gifted” program, develop a criminal attitude, and join a gang of adolescent hoodlums who will beat the crap out of anybody who lays a hand on you. Become one of the biggest dope dealers in high school. Learn how to play guitar. Also, if somebody calls you a “faggot,” overcompensate by becoming voraciously heterosexual.
UPDATE II: Linked by Donald Douglas at American Power.
For the benefit of the irony-impaired, I should admit that the proposed Advanced Bullying Survival Methods curriculum is intended as humor. Just because it worked for me doesn’t mean I would recommend it to anyone else.
The point of the joke: While I am not unsympathetic to victims of bullying, most kids either have the inner resourcefulness to figure out how to deal with it, or else they are hopeless losers anyway.
The current “anti-bullying” crusade is another one of those Ideas So Stupid Only Public School Teachers Could Think It Was Smart. Having gone to school in the 1960s and ’70s, I was a guinea pig in more than one of those “innovative” educational experiments, including an early attempt at a “gifted” program.
You know what any smart kid eventually figures out? Most of his teachers aren’t very smart. Putting an obviously mediocre teacher in charge of a “gifted” program? That’s really stupid.
I love education. It’s school I hate.
UPDATE III: Nice headline by Doug Powers:
Anti-bullying speaker teaches students all about irony

I’m reminded of the Simpsons “Rio” cartoon. “Ooh! I just hope they’re going to a better place!”

We could sell the video. I’m betting to Dan Savages’s readership. *cheezy jazz music*

I agree. If you want this type of indoctrination stopped don’t waste your time arguing with Savage. Go after the morons and/or subversives who selected him and gave him that stage.
Those people need to be called to account, and need to be made to offer public apologies to everyone in attendance.
Shame is a two way street and those people need their names featured at least as prominently as Savage’s.

Time to notify “it get’s better”‘s sponsors. A link to the article in the examiner should do the trick.

He’s an idiot thinking he knows what slavery is in the Bible. Indentured servitude is what you did if you were destitute. Attaching yourself to a household for a space of time until you could buy your way out. Actually sounds like a way better idea than welfare!

Well put, but this is a matter of honor.

Also, it was for a limited time, I think seven years, but I’m not sure as I’m working here on a long-ago and imperfect memory. But I’m also pretty sure the “slave” couldn’t be sold to somebody else, and his family and descendants could not be bound in perpetuity.

So a guy who preaches against bullying turns out to be the biggest bully in the room.
I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked.

Careful, while the fool knows nothing about slavery in the Bible (that what his own towering prejudice conjures up), indentured servitude was/is not exactly a bed of roses — indentured servants were/are oftentimes treated worse than slaves (as they were not permanent property their owners were/are often tempted to get as much “value” out of them as possible before their term of service is up).
I believe Matthew 7:12 addresses this problem somewhat.Just a quibble, truly, but something that should be pointed out imhao.

I don’t think anyone is arguing for a return to the days of indentured servitude, just pointing out that it was a hell of a lot different from the traditional meaning of slavery. There were also rules for the well-being of such “slaves”, but Israel, like any country, was subject to the same inclinations towards corruption as anywhere else, so there doubtless were abuses of the system.

Of course, Democrats are dependent on both bullying and racism to fund their party, since the modern slave trade, where they sell kids to the educrat cartels for campaign donations, is what supports them

April 29th, 2012 @ 10:37 am
I agree with you. Of course the MSM would have portrayed it as some random bunch of homophobes attacking a well-known gay activist, and not a word would have been said about the reason for the beating. Or if they had, they would have portrayed it as overblown, etc. It doesn’t matter though, his time is coming. Maybe not the ass-whuppin’ that he deserves, but the laws of nature send shit back to those who send it out, eventually.

“Gaystapo”. I like that.

The problem is that while you may not consider such a thing, and others may not as well — there are always those who would definitely like to see that very thing.
Never underestimate human nature and its capacity for nasty things.

But slavery already exists, still, even in this country. Granted, it usually revolves around the sex trade, so not many people pay that much attention to it, even though many of the victims are children. But it goes beyond sex servitude as well, and goes into the area of sweatshop labor, usually involving undocumented immigrants. Or illegal aliens, if you prefer (I don’t in this case, because the vast majority of these people are victims).
So yes, it not only can happen, it is happening under our collective noses. And more to your point, in a great many cases the victims were sold a bill of goods to the effect that they would be the equivalent of temporary indentured servants.
But technically speaking, while there are similarities between the two, in proper parlance there are also significant differences.
April 29th, 2012 @ 2:07 pm
Years back when I was still a democrat, I was listening to Al Franken’s radio show on Air America when he had Savage on as a guest. Savage likened, gay males exploiting teenage male runaways as prostitutes, as “embracing” them. Savage is a monster, who views preying on children as a normal activity. Vile types like Savage want to impose what passed for normal under Caligula.

Of course using nitpickec parts of the bible to defend things like slavery is bull**it. It’s basically all he was saying, and to claim he “called the bible bull**it” is disingenuous at best. The whole faux-outrage walkout thing was clearly staged as well. Just another political stunt, by people defending the abuse and dehumanization of others, to try and again pretend that they are victims.

Dani-boi is nothing more than a hell-bent fool. When his time comes, he will find himself without an excuse, and will wish he hadn’t taken the path he is on.
On the other hand, if he wises up and changes his mind, he might do some good for the righteous ones. I hope he changes, and does the right thing.
