Gingrich Gets Stomped by 30 Points in Delaware; Fourth in Pennsylvania
Posted on | April 24, 2012 | 42 Comments
As predicted, the talk of Newt Gingrich winning Delaware turned out to have been delusional: Mitt Romney got 57% to Gingrich’s 27% in the state where Newt had campaigned heavily in recent weeks.
We have known since April 8 that Gingrich’s campaign was more than $4 million in debt. By continuing his campaign another 16 days, Newt appears to have placed third in Rhode Island and also third in Connecticut. He may finish within 40 points of Mitt in New York.
In his native Pennsylvania (many people forget Gingrich was born in Harrisburg), Newt appears to be on his way to a fourth-place finish behind Rick Santorum, who ended his campaign April 10.
Thanks to CAC at Ace of Spades HQ. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is going to give a speech tonight in New Hampshire, a state where Mitt (a) won the primary and (b) trails Obama in the most recent poll.
Gonna be a lot of states like that. I’m just sayin’ . . .
UPDATE: Excerpts of Romney’s speech. You know who I personally blame for Newt’s pathetic shuffling zombie campaign? Here’s a four-word clue: “Second look at Gingrich?” It’s like he didn’t take The Boss seriously: “Newt for 2012? No, thanks.”
Anyway, Allahpundit wants to see Gingrich keep going until Newt’s humiliation and embarrassment are complete, I guess.
Exit question: Are the “campaign insiders” still getting paid?
UPDATE II: Guess the checks started bouncing: It’s finally over.

I saw earlier that Rick had 12% of the vote in NY with 1% reporting in. It was something like 264 votes, one of which I am proud to say was MINE.
It was my last chance to have any kind of say in the matter, and I crawled out of my sickbed to do it. I am glad that I did even if it was for nothing.
April 24th, 2012 @ 9:52 pm
But he’ll look soooooo good giving that concession speech in early November. We the Party of Stupid love good looking sacrificial lambs.
April 24th, 2012 @ 9:55 pm
Santorum could have swung behind Newt as a better alternative to Romney. But no. Better to be right, I suppose.
April 24th, 2012 @ 9:57 pm
If Romney can’t beat Obama, neither could anybody that run, or most of anybody else except maybe Palin, possibly Bachman and arguably Perry. But Palin never entered, and the other two didn’t stay in long enough to make any kind of long-term impact. It’s not like we have any other good options.
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:00 pm
I did early voting in Indiana yesterday. Voted for Santorum. Also voted against Lugar.
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:06 pm
Expect an “impassioned” speech by Gingrich ending his campaign and possibly endorsing Ron Paul.
Well, one can always hope, right?
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:06 pm
I can’t blame him for that, what is to be gained by dragging this thing out? Romney is going to be the nominee. I can think of good, valid reasons to vote in the Kentucky Primary for Santorum, for Newt, and yes even for Paul, the one overlapping reason being to “make a statement”. Or I could write in Palin or Bachman for the same reason. But I think I’m going to go ahead and vote for Mitt now, just to make another statement. Its over, Mitt is going to be the nominee, and its time now to focus on beating Obama and electing as many Tea Party Republicans to the House, Senate, and statehouses as humanly possible.
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:08 pm
Who’s running against Lugar? Is it a good Tea Party Republican, or just another younger establishment upstart? If the former, I wish him well. If the latter, I still wish him well, just not quite as well.
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:30 pm
Let’s see – a very distant second (where he got more than doubled up), three thirds (including one where he was less than a percentage point away from 4th), and a fourth.
The question is not whether the insiders are getting paid, but how many books and videos Newt and Callista still have to hawk to break even on that venture?
April 24th, 2012 @ 10:33 pm
THAT is the question. The guy has local Tea Party support, but maybe only because he isn’t Lugar? The challenger has made headlines here at The Other McCain. I’ve also written about him a bit:

Now the only theoretically possible path for Gingrich is to pick up delegates from Santorum and Paul. So we’ll probably spend the next two to four weeks hearing Gingrich talk about how he’s going to perform that trick.
April 24th, 2012 @ 11:06 pm
Mourdock, who was a successful county supervisor and current state AG, a solid and popular conservative who got more votes than any other candidate in 2010, including Mitch Daniels.

There comes a point where you have to decide: you are either on board with the team, or you aren’t.
The point of decision is near.
April 24th, 2012 @ 11:41 pm
Don’t you love these sore loser conservatives that still want to whine how Romney is going to lose to Obama? (despite several polls showing him winning)
Are they really that pathetic that they genuinely want 4 more years of Obama just so they can say “I told you so.”
Guess what, if Romney loses, I can tell you one question that absolutely nobody with a brain will be asking:
“Think we should have nominated Santorum?”
The guy that lost his last Senate race by 20 points was not going to be the guy that could knock off Obama.
Maybe next time don’t get so close to your stories, or pick less pathetic candidates to fall in love with.
April 24th, 2012 @ 11:56 pm
Sounds good.
April 25th, 2012 @ 12:03 am
So instead, we’re nominating the guy who ran away rather than take his 20-point drubbing. Just effing brilliant!
April 25th, 2012 @ 12:10 am
By any rational metric any creature with a pulse should be able to beat Obamsky. We’ve squandered an opportunity not that it matters in the end.
April 25th, 2012 @ 12:15 am
Romney will win. Peer though the polls, Obama has no support. If Romney loses the vote was rigged.
The only actual votes Obama will receive will be from government workers, union workers, and those on the dole.
But I repeat myself, don’t I?

I’m just waiting for the author of the article to mention who it was that came in second in Rhode Island and Connecticut. I gather that person has a last name that rhymes with Fall.
April 25th, 2012 @ 1:32 am
Your personal vendetta with Newt is pathetic and low class.
Its uneeded, beyond the pale and is just making you and your site stink.

You are sure that your trio of villains is NOT a majority of the voters?
April 25th, 2012 @ 5:24 am
I am absolutely certain my trio of villains is NOT a majority of the voters. If he wins it’s voter fraud.
April 25th, 2012 @ 5:43 am
I’m sorry, TR. Gingrich, like Rick Perry, waged a candidacy badly, in such a way that his campaign became the receptacle for the support for a lot of people who opposed Romney, but in fact the campaign prevented them from supporting the candidate (Santorum) who had the best chance of beating Romney.
Perry’s foolish decision to keep going after Iowa — but then to quit two days before the South Carolina primary — was an example of how his campaign served as a distraction. Perry then endorsed Newt, whose campaign’s viability imploded somewhere between Florida and Nevada. Yet, like Perry, Gingrich kept going long enough to distract people from the real choice in the race: Romney vs. Santorum.
It’s possible — looking back now — to wonder if there was ever any chance that anyone could have beaten Romney, whose overwhelming money advantage ultimately proved decisive. But if there ever was a chance, it was Santorum. People should have recognized that sooner than they did, and you will excuse me for bearing a bit of a grudge. Also, remember: Dede Scozzafava.
April 25th, 2012 @ 7:54 am
Brian, he’ll look marvelous.
April 25th, 2012 @ 7:57 am
Since the race for the GOP Nod is over and you’ll have to hold your nose and vote for Willard in the Fall, why not cast your Primary vote for whoever you really wanted – at least, you get that small satisfaction out of this whole micheghas.
April 25th, 2012 @ 8:02 am
If you’re talking about Willard’s Team, then why this either/or? I will vote for him on 06 November, but why am I obligated to do anything other than that?
April 25th, 2012 @ 8:05 am
Thanks for the brilliant insights, Clyde. Your mom’s calling: she wants you to take the clothes out of the dryer, but don’t try to fold them ’cause you always do it wrong…oh, and let her know what you want her to pack for your lunch tomorrow.
April 25th, 2012 @ 8:05 am
Don’t forget the dead and people like ‘Mickey Mouse’!
April 25th, 2012 @ 8:08 am
Then why do you keep coming back here?
April 25th, 2012 @ 8:20 am
You do realize that “those on the dole” now amount to somewhere around 40% of the American public, don’t you?
And that’s just welfare….the actual dole is much, much greater.
But I love the way you’re already setting up excuses and targets for finger pointing…because it couldn’t possibly be unwinnable by your canidate, right?
April 25th, 2012 @ 9:18 am
I wish you a speedy recovery Zilla. Thanks for voting.
April 25th, 2012 @ 9:20 am
I am not a big Mitt Romney fan, but he will look better than this Loser! (and yes Wombat I linked you guys).
April 25th, 2012 @ 9:27 am
I’m on my country’s team. I wish the GOP was.
April 25th, 2012 @ 10:14 am
Why are you prejudgiced against Undead Americans?
April 25th, 2012 @ 10:23 am
But I won’t have to hold my nose to vote for Mitt. I will do so proudly. A hell of a lot more than I did for McCain in 2008, when I only voted because of Palin on the ticket. It’s different now, we’ve had four years of Obama, and I’m ready to get that POS out of there. Mitt, for all his faults, has plenty of good qualities. I choose to focus on them.
April 25th, 2012 @ 10:28 am
‘Cause they smell.
April 25th, 2012 @ 10:38 am
Perry could have beaten Obama if he hadn’t done so godawful in the debates, and in the meantime he distracted support from Bachmann, who despite what Adjoran and others say was more than qualified, and possibly could have beat Obama.
Cain could have beat Obama, but he let his woman troubles foil him because he didn’t handle them in an appropriate manner.
Gingrich could have beaten Obama if he had focused on Obama and the left while he was up in the polls, instead of attacking Romney through sheer anger and petulance.
Santorum could have beaten Obama, but he screwed up too in innumerable ways which I’m sick of talking about, other than to say his overall chances were no better than anybody else, and not as good as some. He just benefited, if you want to call it that from being the last “conservative” standing.
Hell, Paul even, maybe, could have beaten Obama if he hadn’t taken such an extremist, pacifist, suicidal position on Iran and the Middle East in general.
“If” “woulda” “coulda” “shoulda” all that is fine if you are writing an alternative history novel. But this is real life, and Romney is going to be the nominee. And by the way, there’s something to be said for being able to raise vast sums of money when you’re going up against an incumbent president. Where would Rick’s vast sums of money come from, church bake sells?
April 25th, 2012 @ 10:57 am
Not so much obligated, its just a matter of how badly you want to dethrone King Obama The Great.

There’s an underscore to Rick Perry’s poor judgement, he endorsed RINO David Dewhurst and left Ted Cruz swinging in the wind. Out, screaming, rageous.
