    When that happens–when you are the only one that has been pimping that hash tag for a considerable amount time and no one other than you seems to show any interest in using it–you know what to do:

    And it’s not as though Smitty has hit on some universal Truth or Reality or even a universal metaphor. What he has is a metaphor that works for HIM, and the Relative Reality that goes with that metaphor also works for him.

    Great! Bully for him. Except . . .

    If that were ALL there was to his story, it would go on happily ever after. But it’s not. The fly in the ointment is that he needs others’ relative realities to agree with his. Hence, the haranguing and whatnot against this or that to get those nasty others to believe as he does. Well, this is just a variety of Fundamentalism, wherein da Fun is not really existential, it’s merely Mental, depending as it does on others’ Conversions.

    To put it another way: “That’s my story and i’m stickin’ to it.” If i am sticking to it just for myself, well then maybe it’s just the right thing, no matter what anyone else says. But if i need to convert others, then it’s just another story, and you can be sure that it doesn’t work for me. It’s by definition not the Right Thing, because my happiness, inner peace, etc, is not self-sufficient. Basta!

    There are a few things to consider, and i imagine that they apply in some ways to many professed liberal, tolerant live-and-let-livers. We all have to deal sooner or later with fanatics and Fundies — literally, the fun dies — and how we do it will be the measure of our so-called tolerance.

     “Kill all fanatics” is a great self-parodying slogan and obviously doesn’t cut it. So . . . ?

    1. Regarding actions taken to promote tolerance, the yardstick is simple enough: If someone is acting in an intolerant or otherwise distasteful way, i can comment on it, share my views, etc, but to compel them to change is only appropriate, ie consistent with my professed tolerance, if what they are doing is pressuring others to come around to their ways. My enforcing tolerance is only valid if it reduces the amount of forcing done by them. Otherwise it just more intolerance.

    2. When does “only” commenting become enforcing? PERSISTENCE in comments in the service of some goal or ideology, in terms of quantity, stridency and consistency would suggest to me a kind of fanaticism, but a tolerant one has to be prepared to live with a certain amount of that. One place where persistence of this kind goes over the line, requiring “the forces of tolerance” to take a stand is when comments appeal to unconscious issues in a group mindset in order to influence them to join in the comments and make life more uncomfortable for the fanatic’s “victim.”

    Lots of generality here, time for an extreme example:

    the Southern lynch mob. With leering suggestions and the right buzz words, it was easy in the “good old days” to arrange for black men to get hanged outside the stream of official “justice,” and the rabble-rousers would not even have to touch a rope, others could be manipulated to do it. The same principles and dynamics apply to manipulation of nominal others who are gathered electronically and connected only by pixels, but the application may not be so obvious. So there is a learning curve, for everyone, including myself. Please be patient.

    To bring it back to the current cast of characters, we have a sort-of-prevailing general christian conservative outlook at this blog which is not really so terrible as group mindsets go, except when it is intolerant. That’s why i insist on diversity as much as circumstances permit, and advocate action (at times) on behalf of someone who doesn’t fit in.  

    One last thing (for now) that might be briefly mentioned is another criterion which would possibly be useful in determining the intolerance level of “only commenting,” and whether it might be “actionable,” and that is INSTIGATION. Who started the blaming and name-calling? How gratuitous was it, ie out of nowhere? Is the blaming in the service of division, competition, domination, or what? Not necessarily easy questions to answer sometimes, but other times they are.

    When liberals seemed to honestly oppose racism, modern liberalism was in its teenage years, going through puberty, when teens are more likely to lash out at their parents and strike out against everything they believe in and stand for. Now that modern liberalism has entered its-well, I won’t say “mature”, just older and more settled phase, they’ve come back home to the racism of their mommas and poppas. They’ve just dressed it up in a different style of clothing, but if you look closely beyond the facade, its easy to see its the same old racism of their forebears.

    The main goal of an internet “troll” is to divert and disrupt the discussion of topics unfavorable to their side.  Notice how Anamika uses this technique over and over again:  in this thread, sidetracking the conversation from the leftists making actual overt death threats against a Hispanic man to a discussion of Smitty’s favorite hash tag.

    This isn’t “freedom of speech” any more than the leftists shouting down a conservative speaker are exercising theirs.  They can’t tolerate the truth; they recoil from it like a vampire from sunlight.

    Why is this troll allowed to operate so freely?

     In all seriousness……you are entirely correct.  Trolls exist to destroy an intelligent conversation.

    I imagine Stacy has to draw the (financial) line when it comes to moderation.  The tighter the security at a blog, the more admin overhead it takes, and that takes time and effort.  Wombat_Socho does a fair job. 

    Take Hot Air — how often do they open up registration for commenters? 

    Short of tighter registration, I see two general techniques for those not blessed with the ability of deleting trollish comments:

    1.  Ignore them when and where possible.  They seek an emotional response, so don’t give them one.   Even the paid shills get tired of being ignored.

    2.  When not possible, call the trolls out on their lies, bad logic, bigotry, etc., directly.  Do not ASK them, TELL them.  Mocking them can work wonders as well.

    And, yes, I’ve been known to fail to follow my own advice.

    I tended to think Zimmerman was innocent, but I didn’t want to expose myself and the Right to rebuke if it turned out he was not.  It’s looking more likely he’s innocent.

    And the horror show of the Left is disgusting.  But I think there is a large element of bluff involved.  They are yelling and hammering their shields, trying to get us to cut and run so they can wreak havoc among the routed.

    But I don’t see us running.

    The only real danger is to Zimmerman, who I hope is hiding well.  We, on the right with spare cash inclined to donate, might want to start, not a legal defense fund, but a bodyguard defense fund.

    There is opportunity as well, as the Left is mostly bluffing.
