Newt Ally Says We’re Doomed
Posted on | March 29, 2012 | 19 Comments
Alexander Burns of Politico interviews longtime Newt Gingrich aide Rick Tyler, who is now in charge of the pro-Newt super PAC:
“Because I think ultimately, [Gingrich will] be proven right and if Mitt Romney is the nominee we will lose in the fall,” Tyler said. . . .
Romney has “pursued the politics of personal destruction.”
“You cannot win the presidency that way and you cannot win majorities that way,” the Gingrich booster said. “Our chances now of beating Barack Obama are dramatically diminished and our chances of winning the U.S. Senate are dramatically diminished.”
Meanwhile, I wonder, what will be the effect of Mitt Romney’s campaign on the fate of Scott Walker? We know that negative advertising depresses turnout, and Team Mitt is doing everything they can to stigmatize, demoralize and discourage Rick Santorum’s supporters.
Why do I suspect this bodes ill for Walker?

[…] Stacy McCain is right that Mitt Romney’s attack on Rick Santorum regarding “big labor” is stigmatizing, demoralizing and discouraging for Santorum supporters, but especially those of us who are Catholic. […]

Why do I suspect this bodes ill for Walker?
Because you’re a man who employs Right Reason.
March 29th, 2012 @ 9:02 am
BTW: Any conservative worth his salt believes We Are Doomed.
March 29th, 2012 @ 9:38 am
The Senate part is just crap. We win or lose the Senate on the races. It will be tough this cycle, but doable. We should be able to get it by next election (even the available seats).
As for the general election: Both Romney and Santorum has strengths and weaknesses. I wish we had better candidates running, but those two are our options. Either one can, if they run a campaign and fight, win the general election. For Romney that means not mirroring the John McCain strategy. For Santorum, that means reaching out beyond his core base and bringing in libertarians and independents.

Gingrich has pursued the politics of personal self-destruction for over a decade and a half now.
Right now the betting wags are quoting a 61.7% chance for Republicans to take the Senate and a 68.7% chance to retain the House. And that’s under the 93.4% assumption that Mitt Romney is the nominee.
March 29th, 2012 @ 11:44 pm
This is coming from Newt who’s entire campaign was based on trying to destroy Romney because he was a successful capitalist?
Newt’s life choices simply made him ineligible to run for President, it also didn’t help that he was bipolar.
Romney was our strongest horse, if he loses, the other clowns would have lost in landslides that would have taken the House and Senate down with them.
March 29th, 2012 @ 11:58 pm
Yeah. But what I hear out of the state is there isn’t much activity going on among the state party activists on the Presidential side, it’s all about getting Walker past the recall, which means a lot more in terms of effect on the future of the state than 1 of 55 delegate contests.
March 30th, 2012 @ 12:04 am
There is little doubt of it – although it is possible Obama has screwed things up so badly that any Republican might win, there is no guarantee of that – but a lot of these folks would rather go with someone they can fool themselves into believing is a “true conservative” even if it means losing.
If they owned small businesses, they would carefully scrutinize applicants for management based on experience, accomplishments, temperament, and ability to deal with the broadest possible range of people. But for President, they throw any concept of “qualifications” out the window.
They want red meat today, the Devil take tomorrow.
March 30th, 2012 @ 3:30 am
The midwife of Obamacare isn’t going to win against the man perceived to be the baby daddy. Especially since he keeps stupidly conceding ground by saying things like “we’re in a recovery,” and pandering to the AGW fraudsters.
Even Ron Paul would have a better shot a beating the SCOAMF than Mitt.
(typos fixed)
March 30th, 2012 @ 6:07 am
I think Romney’s typical corporate squishiness towards environmental power-mongering is his greatest weakness, but I ran it up the flagpole and no one saluted.
Polls have consistently shown Romney to be at least competitive with Obama, so the idea he cannot win is born of something besides evidence.
On ObamaCare, the Supreme Court may well invalidate it, turning the whole issue into why Obama wasted a whole year on an unconstitutional power-grab instead of economic growth. If it’s upheld, it’s still not bad for Romney.
Try this: “Yes, like the President, I was in favor of a similar plan. But in America, the people rule the government, the government doesn’t rule the people. The difference between us is I recognize the people oppose this and I want to repeal it; he wants to cram it down your throats because he thinks he knows better than you what is good for you.”
Wow, that was hard.
March 30th, 2012 @ 10:49 am
I think Romney’s typical corporate squishiness towards environmental
power-mongering is his greatest weakness, but I ran it up the flagpole
and no one saluted.
I did too, on my own blog and several times on the comments of this one, about how Bain Capital had investments in green energy technology and how that might define Romney’s seeming acceptance of such concepts as Cap And Trade.
Nobody made any comment back to me that made me think they even knew what I was talking about. Strike that, no one ever said anything.
All of which make me thing that the opposition to Romney, more than his support, is a mile wide and an inch deep. Not a wild river, just a raging little stream, made mostly of piss and vinegar in demand of a “True Conservative” ™, even if its one who spent the bulk of his Senate years in a leadership position during those hated RINO Bush years.
March 30th, 2012 @ 10:55 pm
The evidence is all the tremendous wins by Republican squishes against incumbent Dems in the last fifty years.
Those are the polls that matter.
March 31st, 2012 @ 1:46 am
”
Newt who’s entire campaign was based on trying to destroy Romney because he was a successful capitalist?”
Your timeline is off. Newt didn’t go after Bain until long after Iowa. Mitt started trashing Gingrich early because he saw (correctly) that he was the biggest threat for the nomination.
“Newt’s life choices simply made him ineligible to run for President, it also didn’t help that he was bipolar.”
Plainly ridiculous. His life choices gave him applicable experience for the job of president, which he would have executed well. Everything else is just political hysteria.
I have zero sympathy for the Santorum people. The grassroots should always have been pushing back against Establishment narratives, and instead they adopted those arguments against one another when it suited them. If you couldn’t push back against ginned up Newt outrage, I can’t really care when Romney turns his well-financed guns on you.
Romney is going to lose because his only successful strategy (spend five times as much money) isn’t going to work against Obama. Only inspiration is going to overcome the money and media advantage and Romney is singularly uninspiring. Newt at least knew how to rouse a crowd.
