Newt Campaign Death-Watch Begins
Posted on | March 26, 2012 | 13 Comments
Just got back from Louisiana — if you haven’t hit Lisa Graas’s tip-jar yet, do it now — and I’m about to take a nap, but first I want to share something I just posted at The American Spectator blog:
The Gingrich campaign death-watch — see today’s New York Times article by Trip Gabriel as a sort of first draft of the obit — is now underway. By delaying their dismal February financial report until the last minute (they blurted the ugly truth to Politico the day the FEC report was due), Gingrich’s campaign was able to maintain a mirage of viability for nearly three weeks into March, but that’s all over now. . . .
Just imagine yourself as a vendor to the Gingrich campaign, waiting for an overdue payment, and then reading that New York Times story about Newt rolling across rural Louisiana, where “a 10-car motorcade conveys him like a head of state, three police cars with flashing lights leading a Secret Service detail and shiny S.U.V.’s for Mr. Gingrich and his staff.” All this, to get 16 percent of the vote?
The lavish campaign style, rolling like a rock-star contender, becomes impossible to maintain once “the little people” figure out you’re actually broke. Expect to see more stories in coming days about Newt’s final meltdown.

He still has more than a few delegates. Some believe he is a placeholder for Sarah Palin, that Newt is not trying to win this for himself.

And yet it’s still only Newt that drives liberals nuts:

I submitted the following to my local paper’s “anonymous” reader-comment column a few days ago but they published it today:
Huckabee in ’08, Gingrich in ’12. Is it any wonder I plan to be registered to vote in some other state before the 2016 primary season?

All the Newt campaign is waiting for is Jack Kevorkian. Newt says some popular things, but it was never going to happen.
As for Palin, that’ll never happen, either. She blew any chance of ever being the GOP candidate when she refused to jump in, quit her bus tour halfway through, and then dropped the ball 5 days after her own deadline.
I can’t even listen to her anymore.
BTW, interesting that no one is even bothering with Ron Paul, even as traffic bait.

Judging by their increasingly hysterical comments and tweets I would have though most of the Paulies were jumping ship to Gingrinches. Actually had one in my tweet stream Friday announce Newt would win the nomination without one more primary win or delegate.

Others believe he is a fleshy robot left by space aliens.

Newt was pretty clearly on the way out of contention after his bizarre “concession” speeches following Florida and Nevada voting. Not quite Howard Dean crazy, but only a couple of screams away.
I still think he will stay in to the convention, even though he will lack the five delegations required to place his name in nomination, for the same reason he got in the race in the first place: free advertising for his books, speeches, and consulting work (a/k/a “lobbying”).

Newt down to zero reporters.

Newt is hovering between pathetic and disgusting right now. I do believe Rick could get him by offering to make him the EMP czar, which would actually be a good thing, since EMP is truly a danger, and a pretty bad one.

The post-Presidential Newt?

I noticed that there was not one Gingrich sign in the building, aside from the flyers the Salisbury CRs put together. It didn’t quite feel like a presidential campaign stop.
