Rick Santorum Hears Hillary Clinton’s Caution About GOP Campaign Rhetoric, Delivers Cupcake And Pony Speech

Speaking to Tunisians, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, in summary “Pay no mind to those zany Republicans; they’re just talking election-year smack.” Via Alan Colmes, via Tampa Bay Online:

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton advised an audience in Tunisia on Saturday to “not pay attention” to the comments made by candidates vying for the Republican presidential nomination, saying the often overheated rhetoric of the campaign doesn’t reflect U.S. policy.
Speaking at a town-hall style event in Tunisia, the North African nation that sparked the “Arab Spring” revolts, Clinton said the partisan remarks made during campaign events “certainly don’t reflect the United States, don’t reflect our foreign policy, don’t reflect who we are as a people.”

In a way, one must agree with Madame Secretary: talk of American Exceptionalism, equal respect for religious faiths, liberty, and national sovereignty are not embraced by the American people, as a whole, due to the presence of crypto-Marxists like Mrs. Clinton dragging down the country.
Via Memorandum, we have Politico reporting that Rick Santorum heard the Secretary of State’s words and walked back much of the rhetorical heft of his Americans for Prosperity speech today:

Stepping up his assault on Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum delivered a slashing speech Saturday morning that portrayed the establishment favorite as an elitist and unreliable conservative.
Santorum, appearing before over a thousand conservative activists gathered in suburban Detroit for an Americans for Prospertiy conference, emphasized his immigrant roots, modest background and conservative credentials in an impassioned address that won him a standing ovation.
“I didn’t blow in the wind when things were popular with the elite,” Santorum said. “Because I don’t come from the elite.”

Oh, wait. I may have misread that. I guess we’ll have to wait for Stacy to get some bandwidth and sort out what really happened for us.

I don’t know that anyone is going on much about Tunisia, are they?

But all candidates should be cognizant of the fact that what they say here, does get heard other there… where ever “over there” happens to be.

Stupid remarks such as “the president of Iraq is a US puppet” … wait, wasn’t that KERRY who said that?   Or… how about vowing to make Pakistan shape up and he’d send troops right over the border… wait, that was Obama, wasn’t it, when he was a “candidate” engaging in rhetoric.

It seems to me that the campaign rhetoric that ought to be ignored with the most vigor is the campaign rhetoric by Democrats, such as when they insist on portraying Republicans as bomb happy lunatics.

It would be interesting if we could ever know just how much Bin Laden’s decision to commit the 9-11 attacks were based on his belief that Bush was a dangerous lunatic, sure to nuke Mecca in a fit of temper.   Terrorism is a tactic of force multiplication that depends on provoking a response that will, in turn, provoke a rising up of the masses.   We see a crisis of Muslim extremism.  Bin Laden saw a crisis of Muslim apathy.

And if we are very honest, the extremists are still the extremists, the hot tempered young men are still the hot tempered young men, and where the Muslim street is rising up, it seems to be most often in defiance of their own governments, not ours.

    For example… Tunisia.

No, Santorum “didn’t blow in the wind when things were popular with the elite,” not at all.  On NCLB, Medicare Part D, and virtually every other spending bill proposed by a Republican, Santorum never wavered at all:  he stood steadfastly FOR them.

Rick has actually made some of the stronger arguments for “big government conservatism” and its attendant spending.  Now he wants us to pretend his record and his arguments never existed, that he hasn’t been working for a DC lobbyist law firm since he lost his seat, that he wasn’t part of the GOP Senate leadership, that he has somehow been recreated in a Tea Party mold.

Some people will believe anything, given their predisposition to do so.
