    Yep.  Really wish we had him as a choice this time around.  He could have truly united a lot of fiscal and social conservatives.

    DeMint “gets it” on a lot of levels and at least appears to really love his country and its people, all of them — yes, it’s a pity he isn’t running.

    DeMint’s a great conservative guy – I was an early supporter in the multi-candidate Senate primary in which he was a clear also-ran, facing a former Governor, sitting Attorney General, and up and coming young star Thomas Ravenel (who later was elected Treasurer and threw his career away for a cocaine party).  He made the run-off, defeated former Gov. Beasley in what was considered a big upset.  I told him at the time not to follow tradition and defer to the “senior” Senator, that conservatives needed his voice to be raised.

    For the first two years, he was fairly quiet as he learned the ropes.  Since then, he’s been the conservative star we hoped he would be.

    But President?  Sorry, Jim’s never run anything larger than his Senate staff.  If he comes home and serves as Governor for a term or two, he’ll be ready.

    Similarly, some call for him to be made GOP Leader in the Senate.  That’s not his role.  Like it or not, the Leader has to work with all the Senators, including the squishy moderates like Snowe, Collins, Brown, and Castle (oops, no, the dummies screwed that one up).  That’s what the Leader does.  The sort of firebrand conservative like DeMint would be an awful fit in the job – either his hands and voice are tied, or he wouldn’t be able to do the job right.

    DeMint will continue to be a “King maker” just as he was in the 2010 election cycle. He can probably do more to promote the Conservative cause as a retired US Senator than he could as a Governor or Senate leader.
