HOLLIS, N.H.
When Rick Santorum arrived at the Hillsborough County Republican Party’s dinner Friday, the swarm of reporters photographers and TV cameramen following him was so huge that his own daughter Elizabeth and son Daniel couldn’t get near their father. This video begins with me entering the door and working my way through the media mob until, by the 2-minute mark, I was front and center:

The media were banned from the actual dinner — but I was a guest of Mike Rogers of Granite Grok, so I got this picture of Senator Santorum greeting Mike’s wife. By the way, the entre at the dinner was prime rib served so rare, it still had a pulse.


These New Hampshire Republican ladies are undecided voters who had been for Romney until they heard Rick Santorum.

Rick Santorum focuses on gay marriage

Rick Santorum is not “focusing on gay marriage.” He is being asked — asked repeatedly by reporters and by people at town-hall meetings — about his opposition to gay marriage, and he is explaining his opposition. He is not obsessed with the issue, but neither is he ever going to back down from what he believes.

    It seems Erick Erickson has nothing better to do, but again he’s out there calling Santorum a statist, and Hotair is running with it.

    I wrote the guy off when he went off the rails re:Palin, and now his Santorum bashing.  

    I guess he must have missed Mitch Daniels VAT support and “not caring” about deficits under Bush.  Yeah, that’s not statist.

    The reason Santorum’s called a statist is he is one, 2012’s Mike Huckabee. I am willing to meet socons to the point of cutting out the government funding devoted to dictating what they believe; I’m not willing to crank the government around to spending money for their pet peeves instead.

    Voting for a BBA that was doomed from the start doesn’t make anyone a spending hawk.  Specifically, what spending did Santorum vote against?  He was for Medicare-D, and NCLB, for example.

    But I wish instead of everyone asking about gay marriage, some astute reporter would get him to explain why we needed to borrow money to fund $500,000 for a polar bear exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo.  How is that anything but typical wasteful pork?  Some are saying Santorum procured $1 billion in pork while in the Senate – is that something he will defend?

    They’re concentrating on the gay marriage bullshit because they assume (probably rightly) that it will hurt him in New Hampshire, and that’s their intention, because they are afraid of him. They are not afraid of Mitt. Why? Because they know Santorum will inspire the base of the Republican Party in a way Mitt couldn’t seriously dream of. If Santorum gets the nomination, the conservative base of the GOP will come out to vote for him in force. Mitt. Mehhh-maybe they’ll get around to it. Provided they don’t have other things to do.

    I did catch an interview with him and Michael Graham on Thursday where RS said his votes in favor of No Child Left Behind and the Prescription Drug Plan were wrong [‘I’ve made mistakes’].

    I thought this piece was interesting, considering everyone is focusing on the those 2 “big” votes.

    As for overall spending and his much-discussed history of support for “earmarks” (a position also shared by tightwad Ron Paul), conservative groups’ ratings show that Santorum was better than the average Republican, despite representing a state far bluer than those of most of his Republican colleagues. He demonstrated particular courage in his support for the Freedom to Farm Act and in frequent opposition to floor amendments that would have put additional spending in appropriations bills. Denizens of Capitol Hill in the 1990s fondly remember Santorum’s repeated use of a prop during floor debate called the “Spendometer,” which he used to make a persuasive (and entertaining) case against wasteful federal largesse.http://www.nationalreview.com/blogs/print/287441
