Doubling Down On Ehlinger’s Argument

Emphasis mine:
Quit wasting your time and the country’s time trolling Teh Algorez Internetz trying to find the next Presidential messiah. Figure out who your Reps are, figure out if they are worthy of your support or opposition. Your country needs them and you to focus on what’s important.
And no b.s. carping on how you’re in a deep blue district and it’s not possible to win. Fight collectivists where you live first before turning into a zealot over a primary contest on the other side of the country. Remember Barney Frank? Bielat fought the crap out of him in 2010. Sure, Barney won, but it was Bielat and the voters who were vindicated yesterday, when Frank declined to run in 2012.
Ladd stopped by for breakfast here in Northern Virginia a couple weeks back while driving homeward. The Eighth District of Virginia is pretty much George Washington’s back yard. And yet, in our era of Progressivism, the imperial Federal Government has resulted in ‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran, he of the 90 stock swaps the day after the 2008 financial crisis briefing to Congress. How can any self respecting, legitimate American fail to support Patrick Murray, even in the face of the worst odds since Washington took on the British Army?
Go long. Go for incremental victories. I hope at the very least to see Ladd do an advertisement in support of Murray’s repeat campaign.
MORAN DELENDA EST. Support Patrick Murray:

Exactly. Prof. Jacobson calls such a strategy “Operation Counterweight”: http://legalinsurrection.com/2011/10/operation-counterweight-the-electoral-strategy-for-the-rest-of-us/. Makes plenty of sense to me.

Slightly off topic. How did the final vote counts for the VA legislature come out? Is it a 20/20 tie in the Senate?

It’s split, but I’m not sure that the legal rapids have been cleared.

Every office counts, every vote counts. If scientists tomorrow unveil that they’ve cloned a whole person out of the DNA of Churchill, Reagan, and Thatcher, they still couldn’t get much done if the Democrats can sustain a filibuster in the Senate.
The simple fact is that without drastic federal spending reduction and significant entitlement reform, we will be facing further downgrades, rapidly rising interest costs if we can sell our bonds at all, and a spiralling deficit maelstrom that will suck us into default and decline. It’s not a “jobs plan” or an “economic stimulus” that will save us. It’s making hard choices and forcing them through no matter what the electoral consequences.
Our next President is almost guaranteed to be a one-termer anyway. The sort of federal workforce reductions needed to get us close to fiscal sanity will mean unemployment will remain high for several more years. There will be pain, Europe is sending more, and China has their own brand of economic torture coming. There are no markets to lift us with exports. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd have ensured the housing market won’t lift us for years.
Even a President who does everything right won’t get reelected in 2016. The best we can hope for is to hold enough of the Senate to block repeals of our cuts for 4-6 years so they can take effect and help in the long run.
It’s not pretty, but that’s about the best-case scenario. We need to band together behind whoever is the nominee and get the job done.

Wrong. Those federal workforce reduction can be phased in over a period of years, they not only don’t have to all be implemented immediately, it wouldn’t be a good idea to do so, for more than the reasons you stated. Besides, its not the number of federal employees that is the problem. The problem is what they spend their time doing. They need an entirely new job description for the remainder of the time they are there, even if its something as radical as “stay at your fucking desk, don’t call anybody, don’t e-mail anybody, don’t talk to anybody, and if you plan to stay for the day bring a book to read.”

We’re doomed, Linus.

I’d say you’re way too optimistic.

Much as many people would like many of the rest of us to quit certain candidates, there’s no practical reason supporting a Presidential hopeful has to interfere with your involvement in local government. I had no trouble working for my local Congressional candidate in the 2010 election — you know, between my fevered daydreams of Sarah Palin. What killed his run was the RNC’s imposition of Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina on CA. (As it was, the final tally showed he was within the margin of victory had there not been an open-borders immigration reform advocate running on the libertarian ticket who siphoned off 6K votes.)

[…] 5. Hit local dems at every stop In any location you are in bring up the name of any democratic Representative and or Senator currently in congress that represent that location. Link them to president Obama and call them out on the lack of a democratic budget. Every time you do that you help the entire ticket and win friends. […]
