Is Romney Melting Down?

Donald Douglas at American Power: “[O]ne of the hottest conservative causes of the year, and Romney waffles?”
And according to Zogby, in a head-to-head matchup, Herman Cain beats Romney more than 2-to-1 — 63% to 29%
Try putting that on your whiteboard, Karl Rove!
UPDATE: Romney backtracks, says he fully supports Ohio governor ‘110 percent’

This is interesting.
There are a lot of people who are not that into Romney. And before anyone suggests it…it is not a Mormon problem. It is a Romney problem.
But all of this hinges on Herman Cain running a competent campaign (which means stop saying stupid stuff to the media!).
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:25 am
No, Romney isn’t melting down.
He is a principled politician, and union members exist in Red States too. This is Vote-Getting 101.
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:44 am
Dear RNC,
You can have Mitt Romney, or you can have a political party.
You cannot have both.
Sincerely, the 70+% Republicans who support ANYBODY else….
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:50 am
“And according to Zogby, in a head-to-head matchup, Herman Cain beats Romney more than 2-to-1 — 63% to 29%”
It is common knowledge that Zogby’s Internet polls are garbage. Rasmussen polled a Romney-Cain head to head recently and the result was Cain leading 43% to 42%.
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:54 am
He was at a phone bank that’s supporting the initiative when he refused to endorse it. Is alienating both sides simultaneously vote getting 101? His current principled position is that he wants to president.
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:57 am
Naw… Satan is known to have a high melting point lol
I Frickin’ KNEW IT !!!
October 26th, 2011 @ 11:59 am
I hope everyone gathers that this post is a punch line for the preceding one.
October 26th, 2011 @ 12:05 pm
Cain does not yet have the numerical advantage Zogby is suggesting (that poll means every one not for Romney now is 100% for Cain–that is simply not the case yet)… but Cain could get close to that. I would suggest (sorry using Tom Friedman’s favorite trope after “In China they…”) that Cain is at a tipping point. Cain could explode and over take Romney like the Roadrunner–and hopefully do the same to Obama later on. Or he could say a few stupid things too much and end up like Daffy Duck.
October 26th, 2011 @ 12:16 pm
C’mon, guys, let him eat his waffle. He’s answered, like, 5 questions already!
October 26th, 2011 @ 12:33 pm
This reminds me of the scene in Jerry Della Femina’s From Those Wonderful Folks Who Brought You Pearl Harbor where he’s talking with Arlen Specter’s campaign people about Specter’s stands on the issues:
JDF: “So, what is Specter for?”
Flunky: “Arlen Specter s for winning.”
JDF: “Uh, okay…well, what is he against?”
Flunky: “Arlen Specter is against losing.”
Needless to say, Della Femina turned down the job, and then-DA Specter lost his first shot at the Senate. Mitt Romney is starting to remind me a little bit of Specter.
October 26th, 2011 @ 12:35 pm
If it was a head-to-head matchup, I can easily see Cain picking up the votes that would otherwise be split between Ron Paul, Gingrich, Santorum, and any other candidate not named Romney.
October 26th, 2011 @ 12:37 pm

I agree with you, Joe, it has nothing whatsoever to do with Romney being a Mormon. His religion is his own damn business. One of the nicest families I ever knew was a Mormon man, his eighteen year old wife, their 52 daughters, and a bunch of other people who stayed in the basement that I never had the pleasure of meeting.

October 26th, 2011 @ 4:10 pm
I can’t speak to the various polling methodologies, but my unscientific gut tells me that, among those Republicans who pay attention to politics on a year-around basis, Cain currently has a sizable head-to-head advantage over Romney.
On the other hand, Romney probably has a sizable head-to-head advantage over Cain among low-information voters, which is most of them. Even now, a typical low-information voter will have never heard of Cain. A large segment of GOP primary voters will include low-information voters, many of whom only loosely support the GOP, if at all.
So, you have a point. Any time that Team Romney gets discouraged, they can just remind themselves that John freakin’ McCain won the GOP nomination in 2008.
To borrow a phrase from Pauline Kael . . .
“I live in a rather special world. I only know a few people who voted for McCain in the 2008 primaries. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater, I can feel them . . .”
October 26th, 2011 @ 4:17 pm
I agree, Cain would pick up GOP voters who pay attention to politics.
But will he pick up the votes of low-information voters who’ll first be introduced to Cain 1-2 weeks prior to their state’s primary election?
October 26th, 2011 @ 4:47 pm
If “low-information voters” could be screened properly that would make a very informative poll. For instance has their opinion of Romney basically remained in “stasis” since 08?
October 26th, 2011 @ 5:57 pm
When Romney drops out, where do his people and money go? Is Romney going to go all Mike Castle on whomever wins the GOP nomination? Or is he going to murkowski the race?
October 26th, 2011 @ 7:53 pm
I don’t think he’s going to drop out until the very end, when it’s obvious he can’t win the nomination for lack of delegates. When/if he does, he won’t go third party or stay home and sulk any more than he did in 2008 when Crazy Cousin John go the nod.
October 26th, 2011 @ 8:15 pm
Romney does indeed support Kasich 110%. 23/6/364…
October 26th, 2011 @ 8:27 pm
What makes you so sure they even know who Romney is?
October 26th, 2011 @ 8:42 pm
Your confusing the “low information voters” with the “no information voters”, now they would be easy to screen for but polling them is pointless. All their answers are no opinion, undecided or I don’t have no idea what day it is.
October 27th, 2011 @ 12:31 am
