Herman Cain Builds Lead Over Romney, Rick Perry 5th in New CBS/NYT Poll

Posted on | October 25, 2011 | 23 Comments

The big news? This poll was taken Oct. 19-24, entirely after last week’s Vegas debate (Perry’s best performance to date) and covers the period during which the abortion controversy was supposedly (if you believe Karl Rove) destroying the viability of the Cain campaign:

Herman Cain ………………. 25%
Mitt Romney ………………. 21%
Newt Gingrich …………….. 10%
Ron Paul ……………………… 8%
Rich Perry ……………………. 6%
Michele Bachmann ………. 2%
Rick Santorum ……………… 1%
Jon Hunstman ……………… 1%

Earlier today, I heard Megyn Kelly discuss this poll on Fox and she felt obliged to point out that Cain and Romney are actually in a statistical tie because of the 4% margin of error. Right: And Rick Perry is in a statistical tie with Michele Bachmann, with Jon Huntsman close behind.

Perry’s effort to revive his campaign has already encountered difficulties. Three Republican governors — Terry Brandstad of Iowa, Bob McDonnell of Virginia and Haley Barbour of Mississippi — are criticizing Rick Perry for playing footsie with Birthers.

It’s a good day to be the Future Ambassador to Vanuatu.

A reporter just asked Perry about the birth certificate. He refused to answer saying it was a distraction and not what the American people wanted to talk about. All the candidates should follow that example. In Virginia when Bob McDonnell was running for governor whenever the press wanted to ask him about abortion or his college thesis he always responded that he wanted to talk about what voters wanted to talk about which was jobs not what the press wanted to talk about.

And yet people keep posting Herman Cain’s political obituary, like some kind of cargo cult wish fulfillment meme.

It gets even better when you compare this CBS/NYT poll to their last two:

Candidate: this poll, delta over previous poll, delta over poll before that —

    Cain: 25, +8, +12
    Romney: 21, +4, +1
    Gingrich: 10, +2, +1
    Paul: 8, +1, +2
    Perry: 6, -6, -11
    Bachmann: 2, -2, -3
    Santorum: 1, -2, +2
    Huntsman: 1, -1, +1

What do you call a campaign that is losing half its support with each update (Perry, Bachmann)?  My term is ‘free-fall’.

I hope you are right.  But I worry Cain campaign could implode if there is one gaffe too many.  I want him to stay on message and deal with the press properly (which is like you deal with pet poisonous snakes–carefully).

Cain will NOT be the nominee.  He’s only ahead in the polls because Republicans are trying to “prove” how non-racist they are, but their true colors will show when it actually counts.  Mark my words.

What?  That doesn’t even make any sense.  I’m a liberal Democrat.  Why would any Republican commenter, especially a Perry supporter, diss Republicans en masse like I just did with my previous comment?  They wouldn’t.  You’re totally confused.  But then, you wouldn’t be a right-winger if you weren’t.

Oh, you’re a Democrat? In that case, say hello to your little White House Lawn Jockey for us. You know, “President” Obama.

“(Perry’s best performance to date) ” there is so much meaning loaded in that parenthetical.   Vegas – with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark —that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

There was a time when people dismissed CBS/New York Times polls out of hand.  I guess it’s different when the result pleases, eh?

If you’re taking incoming fire, that means you’re over the target.

Herman Cain is clearly who the liberals fear the most.
