Great ad, but the smoking at the end makes little sense, except to floutaunt the rules. And if you’re going to do that, why not play the Ladd Ehlinger card?

The drag was a drag.
Not that I have a problem with smoking, it just doesn’t make any sense in context of that ad.
October 24th, 2011 @ 10:49 pm
Navy teaches English? Flout. Not flaunt.
October 24th, 2011 @ 10:55 pm
Thanks. First day, new eyes. I think I’ve heard that word used incorrectly enough times that I wasn’t aware of the problem. Whoops.
October 24th, 2011 @ 11:21 pm
The whole flout/flaunt misuse thing is fraught. *g*
October 24th, 2011 @ 11:22 pm
Uuuummmmmmmmmmmm.
Guess Herman’s a marketing genius and all, and that is targeted at who? South Carolina?
He’s definitely a free-baller…..
October 24th, 2011 @ 11:58 pm
I guess they cut out the part where Block opens a beer bottle with his teeth.
But what’s with the techno-disco-pop soundtrack? Angling for the GLBT vote?
October 25th, 2011 @ 12:16 am
I think it would’ve been more effective if he’d said, “fuhgettaboutit!”
October 25th, 2011 @ 12:34 am
Cain may be on to something. Smokers don’t make a lot of noise but we’re still out there and some of us don’t forget. One of my biggest problems with Perry is his tobacco taxes. And one of my biggest problems with the Republican Party in general is that they’ve abandoned smokers.
October 25th, 2011 @ 12:41 am
Judging by all the stir, I’d say the ad was effective at keeping the Cain discussion going.
It’s interesting how the “worship patrol” over at FR has settled on Cain as the one currently being “worshipped.” Apparently by mindless fools who just can’t be reasoned with. Or something.
So Palin drops out, and they have to find somebody else to paint the “worship” target on. Reminds me of those vulture-like “church ladies” (the kind Dana Carvey makes fun of) who were convinced all the boys in church were going straight to hell.
I guess the idea is, elect the candidate that is worshiped the least! Be sure to disparage ALL the voters to get maximum effect.
October 25th, 2011 @ 12:49 am
Politicians can’t please everyone.
I have no idea what fraction of America, the general electorate, nor the primary electorate smokers comprise, but what might please smokers in particular, is likely not to please non-smokers in particular.
October 25th, 2011 @ 12:49 am
I don’t mind a smoker friendly ad…I just did not get this ad.
October 25th, 2011 @ 1:37 am
What no dead puppies? Come on Herman, what kind of iconoclast are you?
October 25th, 2011 @ 2:25 am
What we need is a Smoker’s Union. Then we could say “To Hell” with everybody else.
October 25th, 2011 @ 3:31 am
Not sure it’s what they are talking about at FR, but some candidates seem to draw supporters with a certain percentage of fanatics – which shows enthusiastic loyalty, but gets in the way of discussion. Any criticism of their fave is considered an attack, anyone with less than their own degree of fervor for their candidate is an enemy, not only of them, but of everything that is good and decent in the world.
Know the type? If you don’t, you may be one of them.
October 25th, 2011 @ 5:36 am
Hey, you don’t have to be gay to enjoy techno.
NTTAWWT.
October 25th, 2011 @ 8:09 am
They’ve secured the British naturalized gay citizen vote with this ad in a very subtle way [in GB they call cigs ‘fags’].
October 25th, 2011 @ 8:10 am
No Marlboros, No Peace!
October 25th, 2011 @ 8:13 am
They should have filmed The Smoking Man sitting at a table, doing shots of bourbon, and sprinkling salt on a big ol’ t-bone steak.
October 25th, 2011 @ 10:30 am
The outsider candidate appeals to those forced outside (and now prohibited there!). This is not hard.
October 25th, 2011 @ 11:50 am
Actually, the drag at the end makes the ad. Without it its just a guy talking up his candidate, nothing particularly memorable. Then along comes the drag, and it’s like an exclamation point. Take Back America. Brilliant. I also like the way Cain ends his ads, with the shot of him turning from profile to looking at the camera and then smiling broadly.
Now if he’ll just get his ass to Iowa and start to work he might actually exceed expectations. If he really wants to win, that’s what he has to do. There’s Iowa farmers with cows that need milking.
October 25th, 2011 @ 1:02 pm
I find it fascinating that with so many serious issues we face, some people (not necessarily on this site) are all hot and bothered about Mark Block smoking a cig at the end of a campaign ad. I don’t give a rat’s ass if someone wants to smoke, drink, use too much salt, eat french fries, if their kids happy meal has a toy in it, or whether they like to do it doggie-style. Maybe Herman Cain, through absurdity, should illustrate how absurd it is for people to be focused on such petty crap, when our own SCOAMF has recently stated the following:
“I’ve told my administration to keep looking every single day for actions we can take without Congress…”
Now THAT’S something to be concerned about.

Cain Scores: The Smoking Man…
I can’t say exactly why, but I like this ad… ‘Mischievous’ is the first word that comes to mind [is that a twinkle in Mr. Cain’s eyes?]. William B. Davis is the first person that comes to mind. Big tip of the fedora to Admiral …
October 25th, 2011 @ 5:57 pm
Every forum has novice members and those who do not argue well. They are the ones that make logically weak arguments, and usually resort to posts lauding one person, and insulting another. The regulars and long-timers can usually sniff those out and ignore them when they become obnoxious, or help them out, as they see fit.
But the cynical, “operative” types use them (the ones who have trouble with debate) to discredit all of the folks who make good arguments. They lump everyone into the stupid “worship” barrel, and claim the candidate is somehow tarred with “a bunch of blind, fanatic worshipers.”
It’s a very low-minded, John Edwards style form of attack, and only sways those with similar logic-impairment.
EVERY candidate draws folks that have trouble expressing themselves. Only a weasel argues as though some (ie, the one they support) do not.
One of the reasons I caucus with Conservatives is because they usually favor rational thinking and robust debate. The worship-accusers are simply non-rational, and damage the brand.
